Hi - has anyone been able to emulate the vocal sample sound as used on the above track? I can't get the attacking "Do'h" part of the sound! Tried mixing a few of the vocal patches but nothing sounds right.

Any tips?

Dunno if Krome has a vocal "D'oh" sample but if it does you might want to try writing the sample into a user drum kit.

Just spread the same sample over the octave or so that's needed.

You'll need to use the resulting user "vocal kit" in a program, but it should let you tune the sample pitch-wise without too inducing too much time based distortion and will work better than, say, multiple iterations of one note from an existing vocal program, detuned, and mapped to different keys.

The user vox kit should also give you better consistency for programing things like attack and cut-off as well; the associated program's ADSR can be set more precisely (as a custom program) than when using an established pre-set "vocal sample kit".

Finally, I think there's a formant filter in IFX (talk box? resonance filter?) that may let you get closer to the "D'oh" if you're using a "Doo" sample as a starting point.

I'd compress the heck out of it, too.

Ahem... "sampled...", ergo not "in" Kronos' ROM. And, since Krome's not a sampler....

BTW: Soundcloud example sounds like a digital lift from actual tracks with a hard filter eliminating instruments outside of the relatively narrow vocal range (reverse of a "vocal eliminator" algorithm).

If you do have sampling capability that might be a decent place to start.

No sounds from the OASYS, all sounds are generated by the Kronos. The synth sound I used should be on the OASYS, it's a polysixEx sound, 80's Ana Strings (I think is what it was called)that I've added modulation to. Brass sounds are stacked from various brass section, trumpet, saxophone and trombone programs. The rest are sampled from that Soundcloud link and converted them into a program. Although this was from the Kronos, you can replicate all this on the OASYS .

I'm working on this song too. Program UB060 "1999 Power Synth" seems to be a dead ringer for the synth sound... just add some modulation. Edit: sorry, just noticed this was the Krome forum, came from google search. Just happened to me in another thread too... anyway, that sound will work on the Kronos.

As for the vocals, you could just sample them off the original recording... there's nothing else going on at the beginning of the song. I myself am debating whether to sample those vocals or have the band sing them. The bass player has a low voice, but I don't know if he can hit that low C. I'll probably try having the band sing at rehearsal, and if it doesn't work I'll sample the vocals.

Edit: Obviously the above won't work on Krome; my bad! I'll go start a thread in the Kronos forum.

I assume you are a Kronos user - would...in theory...a Kronos sampled patch of this vocal riff work in a Krome? IF I was to find someone that had already sampled it into their Kronos, and say saved it to an SD card and I loaded the sample from the SD card into my Krome? If this worked I'm sure there would be lots of Krome users that would pay a small fee for this! I would!

Hmm I'm not sure as I haven't really used Krome. Does it support KSC format samples?

I sing bass in my group so I can perform the Doh Doh's, live. But I've been experimenting with the synth rise patch.

I've got a Korg Triton Studio and have the Power Synth Patch for the basic synth sounds but I'm trying to duplicate the synth rise as described in this thread.

Keep in mind I'm a bit ignorant with many of the terms used but I think I'm close to duplicating the synth rise except in the recording the synth rise spans a total of 3 octaves and I can only manage to get 2 octaves to rise when adjusting the attack.

I've searched and searched my Param guide but I can't seem to find any parameter that will allow me to expand the pitch to encompass 3 octaves.

Can anyone help me out ?

Hi Ed,

Can't give you a step by step guide because 1) I use my Krome for the rise sound and 2) my Triton is tucked up in the garage and I don't have time to set it up.....but in haste....

You need to find the program that you want (not a combi) and then enable the Portamento feature. I don't use the attack control as you describe and am not sure how that would work to be honest.

Anyway, once you have enabled this, you can select the time that the pitch takes to change so just experiment with the controls you have. I will look at the settings on my Krome next time I get it out and report back.

Interestingly though the song is in D, I found that starting the rise from an E and making it rise a few octaves to a higher E works well.

I hope that makes some sense, have a go and let me know how you get on!

I'm familiar with the technique you describe in fact I use that for the slide whistle FX in moves like Jagger but the rise in Uptown Funk spans three octavesand I need to place it into a combi and trigger it with one key I can't afford to give up that much real estate

I know what you mean but I don't know off the top of my head how you can do that without using a sample.

When I play this track I switch between combi for the chorus and program mode just for the riser part as you need all the octaves.

I have the riser sound as a sample somewhere, that way it could be assigned to one key. If you give me your email address I will try and forward it to you!

Or record the sound yourself as a sample?
