Since OS3 i started noticing on my kronos (original model with x configuration) that after being a bit of time on "FAN COOLING" in red letters would appear blinking on the screen and never stop until i'd turn it off.

After a bit the kronos starts getting much slower and plays my sequences full of errors and delays. It also feels pretty hot.
Today, for the first time i went to check the fan control setting and the temperature was 101C.

This is obviously not good.

Did anyone have this issue? Is my kronos faulty?

While I'm not a Kronos expert, I am a computer guy. Fortunately the Kronos has a computer motherboard so basic computer troubleshooting applies here:

If your processor is overheating, CPU miscalculations can occur which might explain what you're talking about. Most computers would bluescreen/crash or freeze, but depending on what's going on it could just be showing the errors in sound you're experiencing.

There's a few reasons this could happen, but it sounds like either the fan isn't running, is running too slowly, or something's happened to the processor heatsync on the motherboard.

Did it only start happening after the OS update? Something you might consider trying is saving your sounds and re-flashing the OS again. Sometimes corrupt data makes it's way in, though when you flash the OS I believe it does a checksum to make sure the OS matches what was downloaded.

Sometimes just resetting everything to "Factory" will do the trick too.

If it's hardware, and the Kronos isn't under warranty anymore, you might consider making sure the fan is definitely connected and running when the Kronos is on. If the fan is fine, then it could be that the thermal paste between the processor and heatsync is dried up and no longer efficient (VERY unlikely based on your symptoms, but shouldn't entirely rule it out)

I would check your OS first though, reload it and factory reset, see if that fixes it. If not, then I'd look at the fan and make sure it's running properly. (Take the back off of the Kronos, ensure the fan isn't jammed up and is spinning properly)

Finally I would reseat the heatsync with new thermal paste but that's a little more intrusive if you're not familiar with computers.

It was just in OS3 that the red warning appeared wasn't it?

Well, before OS3 the fan would start running faster and then stop and be quieter.

It never had these kind of problems with the sequences struggling to play, altough it crashed quite a few times in seq mode.

So you think i should re install OS3 again? I'll do that.

And yes it is still under warranty so i probably shouldn't be messing in the inside.

What should happen is the fan should speed up if the temperature increases, to help cool the processor down. If you're not hearing that, or it used to but isn't now, then it's possible there's something odd happening in the OS.

I would try reloading the OS from scratch and making sure once it's reloaded that you revert to factory settings.

Once this is complete, if it still crashes I would go to your dealer and get them to take a look since that's obviously not typical behavior.

If the fan is running, you should hear it and it makes a Eb note, if I remember well.

If not, open your Kronos =)

If this is a real core temperature then motherboard protection circuit should had turned off power supply !
Forget if fan is working (75 C max without fan) and If your guarantee has voided , open bottom cover and either check
CPU passive cooling metal surface if has loosened and not tightly contacted to CPU surface (carriage vibrations)
nor check cooler surface temperature if close to water boiling point , while Kronos is powered on !
If cooler surface is not loosen and still is too hot , then there is a disorder that will burn CPU , so service is required !
Anything else can be managed with a system & resources reset.

Although there have been good advice given,but if it remains to be a problem following a re-setting to factory state and re-installing o/s and firmware etc;better to contact the service centre.

Yes it's still under warranty.

I installed the os3 again but it's all the same, the temperature just keeps rising.
If i put the fan in "slow" where it's virtually silent, it just rises faster, so it can only work on auto mode, always making noise.

I guess i should use my warranty..!

Yes...absolutely !!

It may well be caused by nothing too serious and relatively simple to fix,but it needs fixing.

Tempting to have a peek inside.....but won't advice you to do so...

Have you managed to get this problem sorted?

back up all your sounds and then reflash back to the older OS version. See if it still gets really hot.

Either way, I would suggest contacting Korg technical support (especially since you're still under warranty). This should not happen. I've had zero issues with OS3 on my K88.

do not wish to derail, but I have a related question related to heat.

Since its Spring now in LA (we skipped winter this year) it's starting to get warmer. One day a week, I have to have my gear with me in my vehicle at work all day, parked outside. I can bring my board into the air conditioned office with me, if needed, but would prefer not to. Normally, electronics have a pretty high tolerance for ambient heat, but then again, a vehicle can get pretty hot in summertime.

Does anyone think there anything I need to worry about having the Kronos out in the heat all day while I am at work? Any moreso than other electronics like mixers, speakers, etc? I am probably just being paranoid (I prefer the word "cautious").
