I noticed while reading up on KRONOS, there is 3gb ram.
Just curious, what is the extra 1gb for?

Samples? You can upgrade the older Kronos to have 3gb too.

System functions/Operating system etc

If a Kronos has 4 Gb of RAM installed, system will recognize only 3 Gb.
It is a limitation of the system. I am not sure, but I thing it is because it is 32bits (it is on other threads).
So the extra 1gb is for nothing.

I'm not entirely sure which gb is considered "extra".

to be clear, some Kronos 2011 owners, like myself, added a 'matching ' 2 gig ram stick to give us 4 gig total.
But that did not give any extra value, in that the OS only recognizes 3 gig of total ram.
and the Kronos X and the X2 only come with 3 gig total.
correct me if this is inaccurate.

I agree. It's a little confusing.

Maybe, in the future, Korg will create an OS that uses 4 gigs for the Kronos.
You never know.

That's true. All x32 OS and application x32 recognize only 3 Gb of RAM. In Win XP exist some special technik to initialize 4 Gb (from boot.ini file), but I don't know if is it possible in Kronos OS (which has Linux kernel)?
Maybe Dan (danatkorg) knows answer for this.
Because of that, Korg put only 3 Gb of RAM in Kronos X and Kronos 2.

I think there are ways around this in Linux too, but they haven't been implemented in Kronos. The motherboard only supports 4GB maximum in any case so the gains would be limited. Perhaps something for Kronos 5 with 16GB RAM

Hey all. I do not know much about the Kronos. It's my understanding that a Korg-created, stock sound, can be triggered from the SSD? I would imagine this is the only way the 9GB pianos can be played.
Can a user-created multi-sampled instrument be triggered where most of it resides on the SSD? Or, does the user-created multi-sampled instrument need to be loaded- in full- into the Kronos' RAM? Based on the desire for more RAM, I assume the latter is necessary.
Thank you!
Kronos seems to be a wondrous instrument.

No, user samples can also be streamed from the SSD.

awesome! So, why do folks want increased RAM?
