Styles & Performances

Hi all,

I’ve read the user manual over and over again… I’ve done some attempts, but I still can`t get which exactly the difference between “Style” and “Performance” is…

I mean, let’s suppose I want to play a song. I choose a suitable style, but I don’t like the STS’s assigned to it. So, I modify those STS’s, and save it all as a new style, in Users, for example. It’s done. I can recall it each time I want to play that song.

What’s different, or better, writing it as a performance? Sorry, guys, I’m sure the answer may be obvious, but I can’t see it. I’d like some explanation to make it clear.

Thank you in advance. Best regards,

Daniel

You can do it the way you are doing it, but you will find yourself setting up STS's over and over again. If you create a sound you like with all the effects you like, and save it as a performance, then you can assign it to whatever STS you want in whatever style you want over and over without having to recreate it each time.

To me, that's the best thing about saving performances, you are saving a sound, set up exactly as you want, that you can call up instantly in whatever style you are playing.

I see...

So, the performance focus on sounds setings. I see it now.

I'm coming from Yamaha registrations, different in many ways from performances. What confused me is the fact you can assign a style to a performance too... And you can assign STS's both to styles and performances.

Great versatility. So many ways to do the same.

Thank you for your help, Kevin.

Best regards,

Daniel

I'm in the same boat.

Just trying to see what's going on in there, not need to do a lot of customizing just yet.

I'm going through listening to all the styles but then I was also trying some of the performances, with the style play button ON it will bring up a style with your performance so you can kind of see what the people who designed the performance were setting up the sounds for.

And correct me if I'm wrong but you get a different performance when you choose a style. There's a way to keep the same performance when you change a style?

I'llt ry to explain:
Load desired style, then touch the screen where PS is (or press PERFORMANCE and search a STS)to load a STS. Then press STS2 button (for example) for 4 seconds to memorize the STS u loaded in STS 2. U can change this ways all 4 STS. When ur done, just press right top corner and save style.
But i do it different. I use Songbook. Its a powerfull tool. I can memorize same style many times with diferent settings, STS, and other stuff. I load a style, change tempo press intro 1(customize your style and how u want it to start)then i press SONGBOOK button, then "Book edit 1", "new song" (both boxes write style and write sts ar checked), u can edit some stuff in book edit 2,3, after u are done press "write", press "T" to put a name, and save it. After that if u want a diferent STS, just load the song via songbook, then load a STS from touchscren(PS) or from PERORMANCE, with red led OFF, or just customize your sts on the scree, with all 4 sounds, put new ones), then press soundbook again, "book edit 1", uncheck write style box, let checked only "write STS", check "current", then pick STS 2 in that list(for example), and then press "WRITE". In this way u can change any STS, and u can create many entries in songbook of the same style with diferent settings, tempo, STSs, etc
Cool, ha?

Hi,

another way to get or create 4 different STS (in other words: sound combinations) is to store it as a new songbook entry.
The songbook is the most powerful tool for overall registrations (more than performances), see:

Hi friends:

What Kronos_timmmy wrote is absolutely right, songbook is a powerfull.-
But if you want to alternate on live situations your sound, PERFORMANCES are the better a quick say.-
To avoid loosing notes o "unespected cutted sounds" you must have the same effects on each performance.- For example PERFORMANCE 1 and 2 must have the same effects.- Otherwise when you change PERFORMANCE you may notice the change if you were presing damper.-
I've not experiment changing songs using (up or down footswitch) but i suppose what i said about effects and performances is also valid.-
Hopping these helps you.-
With regards.

Hi Eduardo,

I don´t think that using a performance is a better or quicker way...
A performance in the korg-world can be compared with a single STS (only one specific sound-combination).
In one songbook-entry you can store 4 STS! I think this is more powerful.
You can alternate your sound by pressing the STS-buttons (4 times a song or more if you use various SB-entries)

Best wishes from germany

If you have midi controller you can change Performance using Midi Message.

use MSB=1, LSB=Performance Bank(0-15), PC=Performance-Nr(0-15) to change your performances .

use MSB=0, LSB=style bank(0-15, Factory)(16-26, Favorite)(27-29, User) , PC=Style-Nr(0-31) to change your style.
for those Midi out controller must match Midi in on korg to Control channel.

use MSB =121, LSB=CC32 Sound #, PC= Sound#
Channel must match dedicated Sound on korg, if you want to change on Upper 1, set Input channel Upper1 same to output Channel controler.
on page 199 manual you find list of sound numbers or simply you can read on screen.

Dance Lead ---> 121.004.000 (CC00.CC32.PC)

if you changing Drums Kits your CC00(MSB) is 120.

Hi Kronos_Timmmy:

When i said that Performance is - at least for me - a quick way to perform losts of combinations, is because i don't use Styles on live situations in my band (we have a drummer and a bassist and 2 guitarrist).-
Although i've never use STYLE as is; for composing i save all Style bars as MP3 (on Zoom R16 recorder); just for showing to my fellowship band, new composition i store it as it (MP3) on PA and add my personal sounds.- This way i don't use drum bass perc and additional background sound, so there is no diminish polyphony for my personal sounds (in some cases i develope sound sith 20 or more OSC, so i'm allways near to surpase poliphony limits (if i play a complex chord).-
Returning to your point, if you use PA as a one man band, use songbook is the right way.- Although to avoid "loosing" notes the effects apply to each sound on STS must be the same.-
With regards.
