Is 'export all sample' something that has to be done every time new samples are imported or sliced?

I imported a few samples from the SD card into sample slots 501 through 50x, made a pattern, did a write pattern, then powered down. Upon powering up, the pattern was there, but I had to re-import the samples from the SD card.

Then I did an export all samples, which took forever, then upon power cycling the samples were still in the 50x sample slots.

I guess I was assuming that after I imported them into the slots they would be saved in non-volatile memory.

I didn't realize user samples are stored on the SD card. I thought that the empty slots 501 to the end were for user samples stored inside the E2S.

Even if you press the Write button to save your edited content, the user samples are erased when you turn off the power. If you want to keep the user samples, use the DATA utility menu command EXPORT ALL SAMPLE or EXPORT SAMPLE to write the sample data to a memory card before you turn off the power.


Next question, is there a way to preview a sample before importing from the SD card?

You've discovered the single most frustrating thing about the ES2. Here's the short version of how it works:

The memory in the ES2 is volatile. However, if you export your samples to a card, AND, if the card is inserted when powered on, it will read/import that bank from the card when booting.

So, yes - EVERY TIME you import a sample or SLICE/MODIFY a sample, you have to export all to "save" it for future use.

Pattern info is different. That is saved when you power down. You can make backups of the entire pattern bank, which is useful for sharing with others (and, good data management).

Initially I thought that with the limited sample capacity that surely user samples would be stored directly on the E2S and that the SD card was just for importing and exporting. That's what I get for assuming.

Now I'm trying to figure out how much of the available sample time is used/remaining.

I exported some wavs from the E2 then imported them on the E2S. That's pretty cool using one SD card to make the transfer.

It is amazing that Korg didn't keep the non-volatile memory architecture from the ESX in the Electribe 2 Sampler. Especially considering they have the same memory capacity. I always found having to manually save my samples on the Yamaha RS7000 very annoying, and it was a joy to discover there was no such hassle on the ESX. Oh well....

Maybe this feature wasn't ready at release time and will be added in the next firmware update?
