I would like to share with you an instrumental track I made wit the trusty Kronos sequenced in fruity loops and combined everything with samples and vst's.
I dont have lyrics nor a singer to sing the lyrics I dont have haha
So I released it as it is for now

I am also a drummer so it comes pretty easy and there is some sort of a pattern usually depending on the melody.
I usually have a 1\4 note break at the end of the 4th bar like I did here on 00:06 I just left the kick out,or at 00:56 the snare breaks it (sometimes only a snare.short fx can also work,like a small "woosh" or an interesting sound while most of the melody is usually not playing that last 1\4 of the bar,therefore making the impact of a small break)you can also add a reverse cymbal that leads to this brake(like in 01:08) followed by a whole bar just with the melody.
to make it a bit more varied sometimes at the 8th bar I do a whole bar of silence in terms of percussions but the melody goes on.or the other way around.
Pretty hard for me to explain it I hope you understood better what I have said from the demonstration in this track. If you are still not satisfied I am sure someone will be able to explain it better (although its also about personal taste)
