Electribe 2 how to route midi to control external synth
Hello all, first time on here but I have been learning so much from reading previous posts. I have experience with music production work with ableton live, and piano was the first instrument I picked up, I have been playing bass guitar in an indie rock band for a few years now and my drummer and I have a new project as electronic music is my first love. I am getting my setup started and want to try to go all hardware, I have the electribe 2 and the microkorg xl+, I was wondering how the midi routing is done so I can have the electribe sequence the microkorg? do I need a midi thru box? sorry for the long winded post and thanks to all of you knowledgeable guys out there, I have learned more from you guys than the sparse information in the manuals!

You won't need a MIDI thru box to control/sequence just the MicroKorg XL. You just need to make sure the MicroKorg's MIDI channel is set to the channel/part you want to sequence on the Electribe. The Electribe's MIDI channels are set for each part. So part 1 = MIDI channel 1 all the way down to part 16/MIDI channel 16. You cannot change them, but you could theoretically plug and play without really needing to change any menu settings, at least on the Electribe's end.
A thru box will come in handy if you want to sequence more than one piece of gear at a time.

As blackholesun wrote before, a Thru box isn't neccessary. Just a few cables:brasileiro34 wrote:I have the electribe 2 and the microkorg xl+, I was wondering how the midi routing is done so I can have the electribe sequence the microkorg? do I need a midi thru box?
Electribe MIDI Out -> Microkorg MIDI In
Microkorg MIDI Out -> Electribe MIDI In (Set the Microkorg to Local Off)
Microkorg Audio Out -> Electribe Audio In (Make sure to enable Audio Thru in the Electribe's Global Settings)

If I'm reading you right you don't even need this many cables. You just need electribe midi out in to Microkorg Midi in. This will send note, control and clock to the Microkorg.Tom 62 wrote:As blackholesun wrote before, a Thru box isn't neccessary. You only need to go the other way if you want to use the Microkorg as a keyboard controller or clock for the electribe.
You only need to route the audio through the electribe if you either have no mixer or want to use the e2 effects on the Microkorg sounds.

The setup Tom62 recommends is great for using the E2 as a looper.
Hit record on the E2, mash a few keys on the MK and when the sequence starts over it automatically loops what you just played. Lots of fun and you can mess with the knobs on the MK or even change patches if you want to audition some different sounds.
One thing to watch out for though is the MIDI filter on the MK. I ran into a few problems until I remembered to disable Program Changes.

No you need to Select "Audio in" osc if you want to use the effects on the e2.psycosynthesis wrote:But how do you punch in the notes on the electribe? Do you just use a normal oscillator part?
