Was the box intact? Did it show any signs of being thrown around during shipping? If so, that could explain the start up error on a brand new unit.

I went thru Global and didn't see an option to stop the blinking.

I suggest a workaround- if/when the tempo blink is distracting you, place a small piece of fabric over it.
