Sounds like a dry joint or broken wire in the joystick assembly, or its connection to the main PCB. The wires coming from the pitch bend (X movement) section of the joystick are flexed by modulation ...

If you're only interested in recording the Kronos into a DAW or in your PC, then no. An audio interface is only going to add another point in the mix.
