I own one of the original Kronos & want to upgrade the SSD drive. I found one on sale for $119 for a 240 gig. Will my Kronos accept a drive of that size? Also, what is the most amount of RAM I can install? Please help! Very Happy

AFAIA you can put any size HDD in there.

The Kronos is 32bit so will only recognise 3Gb (3.25Gb) of memory.

I've got 3Gb in mine (because that's what I had lying about) but a lot of folks have 4Gb in theirs.

I know at least some folks have mounted a 250GB disk. I think budget is more of a limit than anything else, and at some point there's just very little reason to put in a bigger disk.

Far as I know there's only one person on the forum with a 500GB drive installed but no reason why you couldn't install a larger one.

As SanderXpander points out, it's more of a budget thing than a size thing.

Most people go with a 120GB to 250GB drive because their price vs capacity and intended use simply make more sense.

Regards
Sharp.

I installed a Samsung 256 Gb, no issue. The only potential problem is when you want to replace the factory SSD to keep only one drive inside the Kronos.

To resume:

- Adding a drive, no problem. From OS2 onwards, you can format any size.

- Replacing the factory SSD with a larger drive, the advised procedure is to clone the original drive and expand the Ext3 partition. This will bypass any potential problem formating the SSD and you get to keep the calibration data that is proprietary to your Kronos.

If I am to understand this correctly, we are talking about adding a second SSD? I'm finding that my factory installed drive is getting full.
I do a lot of real audio recording. Vocals, guitars, bass, tortured animals, etc. not to worry. No computers were hurt in this recording!

Sorry. Back to reality. It's late here. Are there actually 2 slots for hard drives in my Kronos? If so, can I really put in a, say, 250 gig in the first slot and then at a later date replace the first with a, say, another 250 gig?
Yes I do know we're talking SSD drives here.
I'm not thinking about going bigger because I'm still a bit skeptical about the stability of larger ones.

Yes

I think so but if you replace the original SSD you must very carefully clone its data onto the new drive otherwise your Kronos will not start.
There are some procedures on this forum (sorry don't have the link but a search will find them)

Also make sure that the original SSD (or its replacement) is cabled into port "0" on the motherboard when you add the second drive. When I added my second drive the original was in port "1" which works OK if there is only one drive.

(Make sure the OS is up-to-date first)

There is some good advice, suggestions, recommendations and video clips (e.g from Sharp and others) about adding a second SSD drive vs. replacing the existing SSD drive.
It seems that owners have done both with little problem.
If you replace just the original drive, make sure you have the original Kronos CDs in case an SSD rebuild is required.

Cheers

Pete Very Happy
