I bought Cubase SE at my local Guitar Center (only place here that carries software like that), and I noticed that Sonar Home Studio Edition just went on sale for the same price (a cool $99.99).

Anyway, my question is, which do you guys think is better?
I hear Cubase mentioned with anything professional, and Sonar a bit more with the home studio crowd. I'm using this in the beginning of a home studio, but I'm wondering if I should try to return Cubase and pick up Sonar.

What do you guys think?

I have Sonar, and am not that thrilled.
A friend just switched, and says he "much prefers cubase, and the forums are lots friendlier".

Jojo,

Sonar and Cubase SX are both professional products. I wouldn't say one is more professional than the other.

Both Sonar and Cubase come in pro and hobbyist versions, and both allow you to upgrade to higher products at a reasonable cost.

Sequencer products are very "mature" so there is a lot of parity between the products.

I would suggest downloading demo versions of products to see if you like one interface better than the other.

All pro sequencers take a lot of time to learn how to master, so most people are hesitant to switch after they have spent the time to learn one (i.e. people are loyal to their sequencers).

In your situation, either of the $99 products would be a good place to start (either Cubase SE or Cakewalk Home Studio 4).

Cakewalk

-- Sonar 5 Producer Edition (v4 is $599, v5 isn't out yet)
-- Sonar 5 Studio Edition (v4 is $299)

-- Home Studio 4 ($ 99)
-- Home Studio 4 XL ($ 159)

Steinberg

-- Cubase SX3 ($600)
-- Cubase SL3 ($300)
-- Cubase SE ($99)

It's worth trying the demo versions. Some users take to the interface and workflow of one more than the other, and the range of functions on offer is pretty similar, so it's more a question on which one you feel more comfortable working with.
