Let's first hear what OS1.3 is bringing to us and then start a discussion about losless compression.

Reading that on Korg.de has put a bad taste in my mouth, I'm sorry but "Loss Free Compression" doesn't sit comfortably with me especially when talking about the Oasys. Surely compression is compression, something is being reduced, please excuse my ignorance if this isn't quite the case but quality is something that shouldn't be compromised on this Instrument as it's one of the key features that sets in apart from the competition. I don't mean to put a negative spin on this thread, but that statment has me concerned. |
There are various ways of compressing data so that every single bit is maintained. For instance, this is why you can compress an Excel spreadsheet in a zip archive, and then un-compress it with all of your data intact.
FLAC, as mentioned, is one way to compress audio without losing any data. It works well, as far as I know, but it is too computationally intensive for us to implement when playing back 172 voices at once!
OASYS uses a different method. The space savings are relatively modest (about 10%), but it's fast enough to do in real-time for all voices. It helps to fit a little more in at once.
Note also that this applies only to EXs, and not to RAM samples.
Best regards,
