From the KORG website:

Quote:
The MOD-7 can also load vintage DX-7 sounds, thousands of which are available on the internet. Once loaded, you can bring these sounds up to date using all of the MOD-7’s unique features, layer them with other EXi, and process them with KARMA and the OASYS effects.

I've been doing a bunch of clips for a client that are modeled after old-school arcade games... think Paperboy or Marble Madness (one of the best game soundtracks ever!). So I've been using a lot of DX7 stock sounds in FM8 lately. I can't wait to port them over to the O!

I'm definitely excited at this news!

Sounds like fun. I did this during development for LAC-1, using mostly MS20-EX sounds, with a liberal coating of EQ and Decimator FX to "lo-fi" the signal into the right tone.

But I'm sure MOD-7 will be quite good at it, too.

Maybe that was rhetorical, but hey ...

Would they all port to the OASYS as well?

@Sina - yeah, I think my SY-99 is finally getting retired now... I am so jazzed to hear what MOD-7 can do with FM+PCM and I bet that it will blow the SY stuff out of the water if you give enough attention to programming it.

I can't see a direct import of SY patches simply because Yamaha holds the copyright to the actual samples used but I would be willing to bet that someone industrious enough could conceivably make a "map" of equivalent samples in the OASYS ROM and build some patches accordingly that came pretty close.

I sure would really like it if someone managed to get a way to do a direct import of SY patches, though!!!!!

Thanks!

Sina,

The TX816 and the TX7 shared exactly the same engine as the DX7 and concsequently, the data for a patch from any of those synths is identical to the DX7. And there are thousands of DX7/TX patches floating around, especially on the 'net, so concievably there are thousands of existing patches available which can be ported over into MOD-7. I'm not sure the same can be said for the other synths you listed. And if any of those synths have samples as a basis for sound generation? Fuggedaboudit... Wink Any kind of conversion routines for those synths would have to (somehow) re-create those samples too... And even as with the DX7 conversion, getting one synth to react authentically to the sysex data of another synth is never as straightforward as you might think!

So hold off on the wishlist and check out MOD-7! Very Happy The current online demos will give you a taste of what MOD-7 is all about, though they're just the tip of the iceberg! MOD-7 can create the simplest DX7-like lead lines as well as very complex atmospheric washes and hard-edged techno-oriented sounds.

On the complex side of things, one of the patches I created called "Metallic Atmospheres" (not yet demo'd) requires just holding down a few random notes. Then it plays its own random soundscape in a way that's hard to describe, and very unlike anything that the DX7 could ever possibly do. MOD-7 is capable of creating the most vicious analog-style sync patches you've ever heard as well as very gentle "new age"-style pads that you'd swear could only be made with a Combi.

I think you'll like it!

What about the EX-5/EX7's

In context to FM I do not understand those two EXamples?

And for the TX-16W... this was Yamaha's try to get into the sampling business, right? Do you have sounds in that format? I am curious as there are not many people who owned one and I am very interested how it sounded.

The TX-816 is just 8x the TF-1 module which was equal to a DX-7. I am... I was using one and now I am more then happy if I can transfer all the sounds as the modules break by the time, mine is now a TX-716. If it is possible to use OASYS as a 8x DX-7 that alone would be great... but that is only a small part of the possibilities as mentioned from several others who have been using it already. Check Daz's posting somewhere here.

As ski wrote, for the DX-series there are thousands of sounds available in the net. Klaus Peter Rausch's dx7 heaven is one good resource although only available in German. I am not sure if all links are working properly, but here you go: http://www.dx7heaven.com/x015.htm

I have 2 of those TX16W samplers, with a fairly large library. Sound quality is very good, for a 12 bit sampler. There is an option to sample at 50khz, which sounds great.

I also had the TX816, but sold it. Thanks to MOD-7 and Combi mode, I can recreate those sounds, but with better oscillators. Very Happy

Interestingly there were quite a lot of different samplers but only two companies made the race. I for example had the S-750, which was great sounding as well and had some nice features.. especially with the sounds of wizard Eric Persing! But this is going a little off topic... ok, today is OASYS day Very Happy

Jepp! Right.... do you still have the original TX-816 factory sounds? And the ones from... da**ed, forget his name.. a German guy who programmed some nice TX-816 sounds?

I downloaded some DX patches that include each TF-1 bank. You can also fine the Performance notes and manuals, HERE.
