I've been using Ableton Live for a little over a year now. Love it, especially for its...live playing options (such a surprise!).

Definitely would go with Ableton Live. I've used a lot of programs before and this is by far the easiest to use and understand. Also, it has a lot of capabilities that other software can't come close to.

While I agree with rchaney about Live being the answer, I feel like I need to say "Don't give up at first." For me, it took a while to get comfortable with it. Of course, I hadn't worked with any kind of DAW or loop s/w before. So, you'll probably progress faster.

Anyway, if you stick with it, the light will finally dawn and it is truly amazing how much you can do with Live and how elegant the interface is. Plus, it seems to be rock solid for me. Zero crashes or glitches during performance...and I'm using a 5 yr old PC running XP.

I am using a kaossilator and I want to record in as .wav files. Will Ableton import wav files and use them?

I'm using an iMac, if that means anything.

Yes...and mp3, aiff, ogg, and I believe flac. But it converts them all to wav internally, so if you have the storage, use wav and save some CPU cycles.
