Is it true that a timbre in a combination can only control either internal or external voices?
Do I have to take therefore one timbre for an internal program and another for an external voice?

If you have an INT timbre that is set to the same channel as your other keyboard, then I believe you can use one timbre for both internal and external sounds. I haven't tried this myself; I just use EXT timbres to send MIDI data to other keyboards and INT timbres to play internally, and I've never needed to combine the two because I was running out of timbres.

I doubt you'll run out of timbres too; unless you're trying to build a monophonic lead sound, you'll run out of polyphony before you run out of timbres (especially on the M50, which has 16 timbres instead of the 8 on my Korg TR). If you have a number of external devices to control, you might have problems; if the only reason you're using a particular external timbre is to send a program change to it, you could always put two combis in order and use one to send program changes and then immediately switch to the next one for actual playing.
