since we are in OT mode, here's a story

one of the most beautiful Italian songs of the 70s (an adaptation of Lee Masters' "Spoon River" by Fabrizio De Andre', with beautiful melodies) talks about the village's fool: he feels overwhelmed by other people's command of language - so he wants to learn a complete dictionary, trying to replace mental clarity with "lotta words".

It's endearing.

I happen to think about it sometimes.

My parents spoke different languages, we lived in a third country, I never learnt any of the three correctly [look at my English! And you should hear my Hebrew...].

And when I was a kid, I was 5, I could somehow read words, but didn't really know Italian... my father gave to me this huge dictionary. And I really read it cover-by-cover.

Nice book. Full of facts and things: airplanes, trees, shoes, all kind of farming tools. But no characters, few dialogues, and no plot worth speaking of Rolling Eyes

Well, I later learned that the stories any of us can tell about how he learnt his language(s) are often weird, funny, endearing or terrifying. Never dull.


PS: and after that I NEVER, EVER read a manual again. Never. I see an alphabetical index, I throw up. Confused

Ok, so the last thing we need is new midi code.

But what we urgently need is an eternally unfinished "new midi code project", just to get those most invovded in this thread totally absorbed there, and out of all not insane Korg Kronos threads for months or years to come Laughing

I find what RichF says with respect to the new piano engine @ the new video from Kraft Music interesting. It was posted here:

The relevant part starts at 5:25, and it mentions two parameters, velocity bias and intensity. The first skews the curve to increase the resolution on a given range (allowing for more detailed pp while sacrificing f, for example), while intensity controls the change in volume. In this case, it is not the same as not having velocity at all if you reduce intensity, because the tone of the piano still changes.

Impressions?

I personally dig the criticism about velocity (esp when it comes to piano, in my case), and I hope that these parameters coupled with different responses from the keybed will make the situation more bearable. But this is something that will require hands-on time to evaluate, of course. I am curious about how convincingly you can tailor the response of the pianos to your hands with this...

As an aside, I found the discussion on synths having to resemble or not the piano touch interesting...
