2loose - Interzone - Jul 11

Post by georgeinar »

Here's my July song, I do think this is stronger on melody than some of my others. Not sure where all the influences came from to inspire this song, perhaps I'm just trying now to expand my own style. I'm hoping for some fresh ideas for next month. I am finding it hard to stay inside with all the hot summer weather.

Glass Cloud mix?

Your song has many different sections which is pretty cool. A lot of times I'll build a loop and just wont know where to take it. This piece feels like it has an everlasting supply of grooves though which reminds me of stuff by The Mars Volta. Some of their songs have many sections and transitions.
For some reason I picture Rick James singing over the section around 55 seconds.
The ending is particularly relaxing with the pad and acid bass. Wish that part were extended.
Everything is really clear so you did a great job on the mixdown. Did you master this track? Thats something I still need to learn how to do properly.

I would've liked to hear more gating just cause I love gate effects.

Well, whatever mastering I do is what I can get from Ozone 3. I actually do the least to the track that I can and still maintain a sound that comes close to the unmastered version so the reverb, compression etc is almost undetectable. I do agree that were I doing a more club-y version of my tunes, that any 1 or 2 of these licks could be stretched out and make a standalone house mix. I wish I knew better how to remix, as I could do quite a few killer mixes with some of these loops that I have done already.

The Mars Volta, I'll have to check them out. Maybe I could get inspired there a bit.

Yep, agree with Charles about the ending. It sounds really cool. It probably would have been a great intro also. I was thinking maybe you could work with that idea in the future, creating an ambient song...with some really nice sounding pads and all with no drums (or just a very slow beat). Having cool effects and melodies come in, panned in different directions, similar to the ending of this song. A lot of your songs are really fast and powerful, but I'd love to see if you could create something like that. Just an idea maybe.

But yeah, flawless production, great variety. And I love the part at 2:35, nicely done. I would say that some of the leads could use a bit of reverb or an echo, but I'm beginning to think that it's more of a personal preference for me. With a lot of my songs and performances I'm always using a good amount of reverb and echo on my sounds. It's just a good way to make it a bit atmospheric. Hmm...same goes when I play the piano, I'm always using the sustain pedal.

Haha, anyways great work once again! 8)

OK, the secret to the ending is that it is simply a couple simple bass notes and a couple arp chords on the right hand, but when I brought it to the pc for mastering I selected the ending and reversed it, applied a ton of reverb and then re-reversed it, so that's why you hear the sound's swoop in, anticipating the coming notes. That is a technique I think could be interesting in an ambient piece, which I have been wanting to do for some time. I do think it's a good idea for me to try doing a piece without my pounding drums. It would allow me to use some of my softer pads on the m3 as well.

Nice. I remember using a technique like that in a program called metasynth, never implemented it in an actual song though.

But yes, try out an ambient piece or something like that sometime. I think it would definitely help expand your style.

To me this sounds like computer game music. It reminds me this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turrican_I ... inal_Fight of of my favourite games on Amiga.

I like your bass lines and your lead motifs. You circle around certain patterns and move from one to another. I think this approach could work well in gaming/film business. I remember your intention of getting into something like that. You clearly explore new avenues with this one so chapeau for the effort.

Personally I would speed up the tempo a little and put some more reverb on the lead, but that's just my taste.

You aren't the first to mention reverb on the lead, so I may address that, and I thought it may be a tad on the slow side as well. So thanks for the feedback. It does help to get other opinions.

Thank you John. I am running out of ideas at the moment to finish up my cd. I may just do a few experimental pieces for the last months for fun and to do something different. I probably have enough songs for my next cd already finished, so I may just try a few other things, like ambient and/or dance loops.
