I just wanted to add in here that I believe the gripe over aftertouch exists because the previous budget boards (the Triton LE and TR) do have it. But they only have 1 insert effect and 2 master effects. They also do not have a touch screen. But they DO have 4 output channels and a MIDI Thru. The TR also has USB for MIDI i/o and an SD card slot. Both the LE and TR also had the capability to sample with the EXB-SMPL board and you can add up to 64mb of sample ram to them.

When the m50 came along, you got more insert effects, you got a touch screen, but you lost the AT and the extra 2 outputs as well as the MIDI thru.

Don't get me wrong, the Krome is a heck of a deal. To me, I dont use AT all that much so I dont think I would miss it. But it is cool to know that if you hook up a keyboard controller to the Krome that has AT you can still use it. But I think thats why people gripe. Past budget boards have it, Since the M50 though, its been dropped.

I can't think of a single part that I play that I NEED aftertouch for.

see different strokes for different folks, With a combi split I could use AT for applying vibrato to a RH sax, flute or synth voice while my LH is playing organ, piano, or a pad and cant play the joystick..

I have splits but I would then just program a fading in LFO=>pitch. Aftertouch can definitely be nice and well used. I just don't think the world would end if I never had it on another keyboard again.

Do you also wiggle your finger left to right if you make an aftertouch vibrato? Smile

Ohh Boy, I thought I was the only one who did that

Doesnt that make a violin vibrato more realistic??? Smile

Considering how alike the Krome and M50 are (unless Kay knows differently) it would be the easiest transfer. Maybe Kay is miffed that Korg aren't installing Karma internally in more of their boards, so he's pulling the plug on anything Korg isn't partly financing.

Pad string parts do sound more realistic with AT, and layered sounds are more convenient change levels with AT, but a pedal can probably work equally well and be easier on the arms. only polyphonic AT would be better but that's not gonna happen anywhere at this price point.

I think it's pretty safe to say that the Krome doesn't have software grade strings anyhow,so the absence of after-touch shouldn't matter.

They still sound pretty good in a mix and in a layer, especially with some judicious use of portamento. It isn't always the sounds but how you play'em. That being said there's some pretty impressive string stuff by Linwood over at Keyboard Corner, 'Let's Hear It,' using VSL App Strings.
