To convert my midifiles to styles and then convert them to Yamaha styles..
Just kidding...
Just hoping the midi to style converter will yield good results..
It would be a great selling point
Yet witouth proof i am still quite sceptical |

I think that the feature will work no better than the current system does...
But you can do it all in the arranger now rather than transferring back and forth between a sequencer and the PA. I see no way that the machine will be able to do all the things you need to do by hand now (remove passing lines, chords, drum hits, walking basslines etc.), nor do I see any way the machine can recognize where the Intro, Ending, Variations and fills are. This gets into the area of artificial intelligence, a tall order for a simple arranger!
But for all but the simplest tunes, with the most basic of backing and construction, to get usable results from the style (other than rote repetition of the source song) for other songs, I am willing to bet as much work will need to be done to the source sequence as the current system requires. You will need to tell it where the Divisions are, you will need to edit the SMF to remove the passing chords, walking lines etc., and you will have to create alternate Intros and Endings in opposite modes from the original (if it's a major tune, you will probably have to either do a completely new minor Intro/Ending, or at least edit it heavily).
So many are looking for a free ride... I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but for all but simple conversion of the song into a songstyle (a style only good for the one song), I don't think this feature will be all they are looking for. |

Quote: | Converting a MIDI Song
to a Style
The MIDI Song to Style Converter
You can convert any commercially or freely available MIDI Song (in Standard
MIDI File format) into a complete Pa4X Style. While Pa4X includes a state-of-the-
art converter of this type, and will most of the times result in a careful
recreation of the original song, the quality of results may vary depending on
the source song. (my bold)
1 Press the STYLE PLAY button to switch to the Style Play mode.
2 Press the RECORD button to open the Style Record Mode Select dialog.
3 Choose the Create Style from Midi File option and touch OK to open the file
selector.

4 Select the source MIDI Song (.mid file), and confirm by touching Select.
5 When the conversion is complete, you are asked to write the new Style into a
Style location. See the procedure in the next page.
6 After writing, select the new Style, and fine-tune it with the functions seen
in this part of the manual. (my bold) |
And that's IT for the manual... Wow! About as informative as a brick
This is the best Korg can do? Possibly the most anticipated function, and a few completely uninformative lines.
This is looking more and more like a tool to make songstyles, not general purpose ones, and your results may vary wildly depending on the source SMF.
I got a feeling this is NOT what most people thought it was going to be. |

I was hoping the tool would analyze the midi file, copy the drum parts, and then choose tracks from a database and adapt them to the feel of the midi file.. |

I simply believe that most people using songstyles have not woke up to the fact that you can drop Markers into an SMF and do the exact same thing using them, with a fraction of the effort and time.
Yes, there are some considerable improvements that the Marker system could use (more of them, and a touch screen with them listed along with the ability to NAME THEM would go a long way!), but functionally they actually work BETTER than a songstyle if you are merely trying to restructure an existing song on the fly.
As the manual says, Quote: | most of the times result in a careful
recreation of the original song |
so please don't get the feature confused with an all round, general purpose style. And, if your goal is to be able to restructure an existing song, simply use the Markers...
One tenth of the work, same results. A no-brainer, in my book! |
