Alright - the ASIO4ALL driver is now out of beta, and it is significantly improved even over the beta version. No, I mean it. SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED. Here's my best non-crackly latency stats for my USB connected Soundblaster Extigy card:
Using my regular soundcard driver: 44ms.
ASIO4ALL 1.8: 28ms
ASIO4ALL 2.0 Beta: 22ms
Now, get this: ASIO4ALL 2.0 (Full Release): 3ms.
THREE MILLISECONDS!!!!! Not a crackle to be heard, and dang-near immediate response time.
WOW! This is fantastic. If you're still using 1.8 or the 2.0 beta - dump it now and get the full release. Freakin' amazing is what it is.

Strangely the program doesn't list any soundcard devices on my computer to select, when the ASIO4All Control Panel is loaded up.
Creative SoundBlaster Live! Platinum WDM drivers are the ones I'm using, too.
I can remember ASIO4All not working at all for me before either, a year ago or so when I tried it last. :/ Same with the kX drivers too, after much persevering as well. :/ |

Didn't have too much success here! I was getting lots of crackles at the sub 10ms mark so I am sticking with my ASIO drivers for now.
Worth a try though!
Thanks

If you're using ASIO drivers already, I'm not sure ASIO4ALL will really be much of an improvement (although I'm certainly willing to be wrong on this point). However, if you're like me - with a soundcard for which there are no ASIO drivers, as the budget Creative soundcards are - ASIO4ALL is a dream-come-true. I mean, the Extigy bites when it comes to out-of-the-box latency (but is great if you are a cheapskate who wants an external soundcard - again, like me!). So the fact that I can get decent latency settings without having to pungle up hundreds of dollars for a higher-end card is just fantastic.
I'm curious why some soundcards aren't showing up in the ASIO4ALL configuration screen, though. I have two soundcards on my system - the Extigy (which I have everything plugged into), and the Avance soundcard that came with my system (which I don't use) - and BOTH of them show up.
As I mentioned in another post on this topic, it might be worthwhile contacting Michael Tippich (the programmer of ASIO4ALL) and seeing if there might not be some bug in the program which is preventing some soundcards from appearing. He might very well be able to fix the problem; and probably is motivated to do so. |

Version 2.2 has been released, with a few changes\enhancements. He's also started a forum, linked from his site, so that people who are experiencing problems or want to give praise can do their thing. He appears to monitor the board fairly closely. |

my laptop using WDM audio is between 96ms and 120ms
Gak. I would consider latency times like that unusable.
ASIO4all gets it down to 13ms.
Whereas that kind of latency I can hardly even notice.
Yeah, ASIO4ALL is a great little bit of software. |

Yeah, ASIO4ALL is a great little bit of software. |
Actually, i was just playing around with some of the options and got it to run stabily at 2ms (with no crackling while playing back "Industrial Insect"). O.o!!
(laptop is an ibm thinkpad A31 1.6ghz with 512 ram.. not exactly a speed demon.)
Eats up alot more CPU when you push it under 10ms tho.
When using something like reason as a live instrument, i find its usualy desirable to have the latency under 15ms.
You can get away with 20ms, but it starts to sound a little sloppy.
Anyhoo.. I'm happy as hell! _________________ http://www.delicamusic.com

this certainly helps w/one of my setups. v 2.6 is now available.
if you have a less expensive card on a system - this does work.
you may need to change the link slightly - it didn't work for me as posted. this link does work - http://www.asio4all.com/
thx for the driver _________________ character is what you do when no one is watching |

Thanks for pointing out the link had changed. I've modified it now so it points to the correct location.
I haven't yet tried 2.6, but I assume it's as good as the earlier versions (and maybe even a little better, of course, since it's got a higher rev). |
