It is possible to set tracks to internal or external. If set to external the track plays an external instrument - like your expander - connected to the MIDI OUT (maybe using Upper3 for expander voices).

The connected device must receive on the MIDI channel associated with this track on the Pa3X. A track set to this status does not play the internal sound - therefore saving polyphony.
Instead of the assigned Sound name, the <E> indicator is shown on a track’s area in the Main page: This indicator begins with a remark saying the track is in External (”E”) mode, and continues with a strings of transmitted Control Change and Program Change data. This will let you know what the track is transmitting to the MIDI OUT (example page 129 of pa3x-manual).

Sounds in tracks of performances sounds like you memorized your performances. Effects assigned to Upper1 have priority - so sounds in tracks of Upper2 and Upper3 use the same effect-programs as assigned to Upper1.
