I'll often use my D1 as a midi controller, and would be really useful to come up with a way to utilize a mod wheel (pitch bend less important). Any workaround someone has come up with for this keyboard which does not have a modwheel? No other real knobs to assign midi through cubase, so I think I'm out of luck. Quick websearch has not revealed really anything that exists surprisingly. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem!

Ideas?

The D1 is designed for a market segment, and price point. Decisions were made at the design stage to include (and exclude) features. A mod wheel didn't fit with the design brief, so the connectivity and code won't be there, making it unlikely to be possible to implement as a hack.

What is the target device for the D1, when used as a MIDI controller? If it is software e.g. Ableton Live, then something like this could be used:

For hardware, another approach is possible. Something like this:

With this device, the MIDI out from the keyboard could be passed into the MIDI in of the MIDI Solutions Inc breath controller. Signals from a connected breath controller generate CC# messages which are merged and passed to the MIDI out on the device. The CC# messages can be set by the user to any of several CC# message types, including modulation i.e. mod wheel. It would be possible to use something other than a breath controller to generate the input signals, e.g. a home brewed mod wheel using a potentiometer and a handful of other components, or this:

As an alternative to the breath controller, there is also the MIDI Solutions pedal controller:
