|
|
I was discussing with a friend of mine who wanted to know what could be done with a raw DX7 piano imported in the Kronos, regarding MOD7 tweaking.
This is what I did: I first recorded the DX7 FM sound imported in my Kronos, without anything else. Then, I customized the sound to make it more living, with a better response to velocity, and recorded the new sound (second part of the file).
In fact, I did many changes, except the algorithm. And this is the result, let me think how you find it!

Made a big difference. In fact, it made it a whole new sound. That said, there's something nice about the first one where it's more intimate and in your face raw. In certain mixes, that can be better. I rediscovered FM about 8 years ago when I received a Yamaha FX-20 organ. I now have the FX-1. After years of sampled sounds the raw FM seemed so pure and robust. Simple of course and not as realistic as sampled, but cleaner if you know what I mean.
I certain like your improvements (and playing) but still think there room for the raw pure tone of FM.

That is an interesting point. I really agree when you say that raw sounds are often easier to mix. Maybe the chorus added might "blur" the sound in a mix and might be removed in the mix.
But this little exercice was not intended to demonstrate a so called superiority of MOD7 over original FM tones, I just wanted to show a example about what can be done, starting with quite a simple DX7 sound. _________________ New Timelapse Kronos soundset:

@ genehart: I did many things!
the starting DX file is named ELEC.PNO B
Then I began to make the envelopes a bit more sharp (attack decreased). Some levels in envelopes are now sensitive to velocity.
FM ratio have been changed (many tests on that). To do that, I needed to isolate operators by couples, muting the others.
A little detuning (not to much!) between carriers to give depth to the sound (and a chorus-like effect.)
I increased the feedback on some operators, in order to make them sound a little less "tine" and more "saw/synth". Feedback has also been made touch sensitive.
I did not use wave shapers (I often use them on my other FM sounds), nor Unison Mode. Only these 6 FM operators in their original FM Algoritm. I only patches the output of a carrier to the input of another modulator.
At last, I added a stéréo Chorus, and a dry-plate reverb, and that's it. _________________ New Timelapse Kronos soundset:

Dude, this very exquisite.
It has that classic touch of those years.
