In the last couple weeks my 8 1/2 yr old Kronos (1st gen) has been shutting off unexpectedly after 20 or 30 minutes. Today I turned it on to upgrade to 3.1.3 OS and it won't even make it through the boot-up. Just blinks off.
I'm not getting a warning message because the power is not staying ON.
I'm currently using OS 2.1.2.
I usually have it plugged in to a UPS, but thinking the problem might be the UPS, I plugged the K directly into the wall.
Never a problem with the local power, tho.
Is there a part / component that would wear out causing this result? |

Possibly it's power supply, RAM unseated (not as likely if you don't move it around much) Hard drive on it's way out. |

I'm leaning toward "power supply" .. would a loose RAM or hard drive on the way out cause the power to cut off? Thanks for response, JFree |

if you have storms on Hilton Head , you could experience power surges. UPS 24/7.
A surge direct to your K, could hit the K's power supply.
Reseat your power cable.
do you gig, move your K around ? Or is it always stationary in 1 place ?
Did you disconnect your K from all midi devices including your PC ? _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

Weather not a factor.
I do gig... but it seems to be getting worse with time, not related to taking it out on a gig. That said, not ruling out a "loose RAM'
Everything disconnected.
Will check power cable, thanks Greg. |

Difficult to accurately diagnose from here.
Could be up to 10 diffrent causes based on your K circumstances
What about humidity ? changes in temps ? Components do not like moisture.
My guess/suggestion,, reseat ram. Reseat SATA cable.
Firmly reconnect both. _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

Would RAM or SATA cable cause power to shut down? |

lets try again.
You mentioned 3.1.3
did you attempt to install it on SSD ? _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

I'm sorry I mentioned anything about installing 3.1.3 OS. It just confused the issue.
My problem is - the power WON'T stay ON for more than 5 seconds. I can't install anything with no power. It starts to power up, then after 5 seconds, it quits. |

You'd better bring you Kronos to a repair service.
Trying to power it on so many times, without knowing where the problem is coming from, can damage components.
All electronic cards do need stabilized tension. If there is an issue with the power supply board, it can deliver some voltage peaks.
So my advice would be : stop trying to switch it on and confide this task to a certified repair service. |

Yes. I had the exact same problem. - K was shutting down. After reseating the RAM, I've had no issues. Having it serviced may be needed, but you can easily try to reseat the RAM yourself. |

Reseating RAM/cables is a good-fairly easy start and could be the culprit. I had a second drive fail that caused odd behavior-would shut off randomly, sometimes fail during boot process, and eventually not boot at all. I've had RAM unseat and cause it to die or not boot. I believe it goes thru a check of different components as it's booting and something off could prevent it from continuing. I also replaced a dodgy power supply. |

This thread scares me. I too, have an 8.5 year-old Kronos. I gig around three times per month (pre-COVID) but move it myself, using kid gloves. I do frequent back-ups, and back-up the back-ups. But unrealistic to think these machines will last forever. Just hope it doesn’t occur at a gig. |

Moonglow - My K started power-failing about 6 or 7 weeks ago, did it 3 times while I was home with it; then i had to take it to a 3 nite gig after that - I thought it was related to an old UPS I had it plugged into.
So I brought along a MODX7 that I have as a back-up. Kronos held up for the 3 nites, and another important gig after that.
I brought it home, worked with it in my studio for 2 more weeks before it really started failing in earnest. Monday it wouldn't even get through the boot-up.
Looking back now, I was really lucky it didn't fail on those gigs. |

Nope , Ram or any media cable issues will lead to screen error messages not to complete shutdown !
You probably face internal PSU malfunction of Chinese Enhance ENO-1612 SMPS that has an average low life duration and its close to stop working permanently !
You need to visit official Korg repair center ...
