have tonal AND volume unevenness in some of their registers. ugh.. you all know what im talking about! right above middle C... the F# G and Gb notes are totally out of whack in volume to the rest of the whole piano outlay. they are too LOUD. youll notice it more in band situations where you think the piano is the right volume, then when you hit those 3 notes, booom, it blows your ear out. lol there are other problems too that i just dont feel like getting into right now. |
If the F# G and Gb (or should that be G#) sound different to the rest, then that effect is waaay too subtle to detect, to my ears, at least. There might be a keybed fault. It might be worth checking the MIDI velocity values generated by each key, using something like MIDI-Ox.
Bear in mind these piano samples come with all the quirks of the instruments used. The Berlin Grand has a distinct beat note on the E key above middle C, which is absent using Una Corda. Perhaps Korg should have had a piano tuner on standby when the samples were recorded.
The Japanese Grand has quite prominent mechanical string vibration, or a too-hard hammer felt when playing middle C at medium to high velocity.
The Kronos Grand C2# key produces a distinct sound that shouldn't be there, and probably wasn't there on the original sample.
Even the Italian Grand has a couple of notes with a distinct beat to them, clearly audible in Black Forest's YouTube piece linked above.

I agree with you with regards to an inhomogeneous sound across the keys, especially on the Italian grand it is (also to me) audible...especially that it sounds very balanced and warm/soft, so this sticks out even more. _________________ Kronos 2-88 & X73, Kurzweil MicroPiano, Spitfire Albion V Tundra, BBCO Core, Nylon Guitar Ilya Efimov, Xtant Audio Uilleann Pipes - in use

Tuning on high treble in Berlin grand could be much better. |

I hope for Black Friday to see a good price drop on shop.korg. Maybe then I might be tempted... _________________ Kronos 2-88 & X73, Kurzweil MicroPiano, Spitfire Albion V Tundra, BBCO Core, Nylon Guitar Ilya Efimov, Xtant Audio Uilleann Pipes - in use

I've been a Kronos user for 5 years now, and, at this point, I think both the acoustic and electric pianos are Korg's weakest spot. I know it's a matter of personal taste, but I find Yamaha's pianos (both acoustic and electric) to have much more character & deepness to them, they just sound better. Again, personal opinion. Also, needs to be said, I'm far from being good at tweaking sounds so... |

I agree, I think it’s down to the editing facilities provided by the SGX2 engine. On Kawai, Roland, Kurzweil and even some Yamaha’s you have the facility to edit individual notes for pitch, tone and volume. This provides the user with a chance to correct to their taste many of the issues people have with the pianos on the Kronos.
In addition on the Kurzweil Forte you can actually swap out samples. So for example if you cannot get a note to sound how you want you can actually dump it's sample and either stretch the one adjacent (normally the most effective solution) or load in your own.
The SGX2 engine also fails to provide detailed adjustment of velocity. The current two adjustment controls are a real compromise compared to the facilities you get with something like Pianotec. For such a good quality of play back the SGX2 engine should provide curve editing and offset for at least 3 zones across the keybed.
Finally the engine should do some real time interpolation between samples. As done on Kawai instruments to great effect. Ok for single note purists it may be blasphemy but to anyone who actually plays for subtlety what you want is continuous variation between ppp and fff not steps. This is something that the Roland Vpiano does beautifully along with the very realistic merging of multiple notes, something that simple playback struggles with. Korg has a lot to do! |

I've downloaded the Italian Grand to play around a bit. I doubt one can adjust the other pianos to match its warm sound, because the Ital Grand doesn't fade out as quick as the others do, its volume stays higher a bit longer. The good thing it's a matter of taste and we have lots to choose from. _________________ Kronos 2-88 & X73, Kurzweil MicroPiano, Spitfire Albion V Tundra, BBCO Core, Nylon Guitar Ilya Efimov, Xtant Audio Uilleann Pipes - in use

It's free for Nautilus, but it is not free for Kronos 1 and X. If we don't have any more OS patch, it will be good to get this piano for free. |
It ain't free for the Kronos 2 either. |

The Korg Italian grand does sound nice. Been listening to these KApro pianos that to me sound great and the $20 black friday price is nice.
Thoughts?
"Today, KApro introduces our completely revised and significantly extended compilation of these three aforementioned EXs sound libraries, EXs75, EXs76 and EXs115, the KApro EXs285–EXs286–EXs287–EXs288 "Premium Grands & Keys" Library Set, containing a huge selection of 128 newly and uniquely sound-designed custom programs, based on 36 fully refurbished and 52 newly created stereo samples."

I got myself the Italian Grand EXS 21 and am very happy with it. I haven't tried the ones you mention. I "assumed" lots of GB helps lots _________________ Kronos 2-88 & X73, Kurzweil MicroPiano, Spitfire Albion V Tundra, BBCO Core, Nylon Guitar Ilya Efimov, Xtant Audio Uilleann Pipes - in use

I'm not that familiar with these types of downloads. From what I can tell they both seem to be about the same size or am I wrong?
Also, I'm not sure how easy it would be to download for me as I'm using a hotspot from smartphone to pc. Did your Italian file get zipped to a smaller size, how large was the download?
Thanks |

Ah, good question...I think it was about 4 GB zipped? I deleted the files again already.. Try the demo version, that'll give you have the possibility to test it out. Only that the sound will fade out and in again in the demo version.
I didn't really look for the GB size as a reason to buy it, it was supposed to be a half-joke....
