Use Midi In to play sounds on external Midi gear?

I can‘t get it working.

An external keyboard is connected to the Kronos (Midi in).
An external Midi sound module is connected at Kronos Midi out.

I can play the internal Kronos sounds via the external Keyboard.
The external sound-module can be played via the Kronos Keyboard as well.

What I want - and does not work - I will play on the external Keyboard and play a sound from the external sound-module.

Any hints welcome!

It has nothing to do with the Midi cable setup.
I would finally like to record the keys from both the internal Kronos keyboard and the external keyboard to the Kronos sequencer.
Both using only external sound sources.
I thought this would be easy.

A solution might be to use a MIDI merger, such as the MIDI Solutions MIDI Merger V2.

MIDI data sent to the Kronos MIDI In are not passed to the Kronos MIDI Out port, by design.

Yes, that's clear.
I expected that I can input Midi note data into the Kronos and then route these data to any of the 16 parts/tracks.
And this is working fine as long as I use INT sounds.
as soon as I use EXT I can not send Midi data from my external Keyboard (connected to Midi in) to my sound-module (connected to Midi out).
The internal Kronos keyboard can play the external sound module fine.

Out of interesst, what happens when BTH (both) is selected instead of INT or EXT?

in combination mode is only int, ext and ex2.

I found in the meantime (Parameter guide page 429), that the internal sounds can be played via the internal keyboard and external keyboards - but external sounds only via the internal keyboard.

In Sequencer mode, BTH is also available in the Track Parameter | MIDI tab.

Hence the suggestion of using a MIDI merger. The MIDI Solutions MIDI Merger V2 device has two inputs and two outputs. Connecting the external keyboard to the Kronos' MIDI In port, Kronos MIDI Thru and MIDI Out ports to the inputs of the MIDI merger, and one of the MIDI merger outputs to the external synth, should work as hoped. Just don't connect the other MIDI Merger output back to the Kronos MIDI In. All hell will be let loose, MIDI-wise ;-)

yes, this may work fine - would be much easier if ext (or bth) would also output Midi in - but this is the way it seams to be.
Maybe this helps others not to waste time searching for it.

I just wanted to add that the results you get may vary, depending on what modules you are using. Some seem to produce far more reliable results than others...

Yes, all fine here too.

I need to Midi merge my pedal and the Kronos and send the output to my sound module.
