Hi!
I'm writing "in 4 hands" with Lorenzo (we live a lots of km far, but at the moment he's away, so I'm posting for both).
As you know, we've wroked togheter to this month's entry, and here you are the final result!
http://www.madinitaly.com/MayMaryBeListening.mp3
The choral sound it's not exactly what ewe expected to have, but in the end it fits the mood of the piece.
I wrote the original idea of the choral piece (made for my vocal ensemble) to be singed without any additional instrument, but in the end, for that piece, we wanted to put some electronics into the "Ave Maria" pray...
I could personally write a lot about my feelings, my view of our world and religion, but it's not the moment...
There is a lot of work and a lot of deep feelings, emotions and thoughts inside this little tune.
Hope you'll like it!

This is really...Unusual..Bright and creative....
The vocals have an amazing ambience and feel for the sacred ...and carry a good line for the text indeed....and is most carefully handled...!! The text would be hard for those not knowing it...but could be easily looked up of course...
Love the fuller sections the most,,(no surprise...) the middle/last part seems just to me to be a bit too far removed from the initial material and then the ending pulls some back together...but it was at that point...pretty far out for this old chorister!! But STILL...Very inventive..
There are characteristics in this that deserve additional hearing and attention. I would like to see a slightly less "frenetic" pace for the ending of the heavy choral part...to the ending...a little more contemplative feel...
The instrumentation is very good...and I ...novice that I am...see nothing wrong with the production ideas you used...
Edit..Sorry...meant to comment on the emotional feel...and it is apparent to me that there is some real emotion at work...a feel of real work and heartfelt desire to accomplish this end result....its obvious, friends...you HAVE done a work here!!
Well Done!!! Guys!!

Love the swirling pads in the beginning. And what great chords are those too. Just love the jazz style fat chords like those. These vocals are simply amazing. Only problem I see here is it is very short. I need a 20 minute suite, please tell me that this is just the opening of a long performance piece for a full cantata or some such thing. You 2 should work together more often if this is what we get. I had the sensation of being in a large amphitheater with a full orchestra/eletronic band as well as an accomplished choir. Very remarkable production, certainly leaves me wanting much more of this. _________________ George Nelson is 2loose

Great musical and production work here with a blend of styles that make for something totally new. It was very unexpected. I cannot say if I think it should have been longer, but it does seem like it could or should be a part of something more.
Where did the voices come from?

Hi!
Thanks a lot for all your very kind words!
I'm going to answer for myself, as Lorenzo will come back home tomorrow I guess.
The first idea was "just" a latin Ave Maria (a catholic pray, if you don't know it you can find the text and meaning here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hail_Mary) for my a-cappella vocal group. Than while I was writing that choral part happened some sad days for me (Lorenzo knows'em all ) and so I wanted to write some different, not only a pray, but something deeper (from the musical point of view, of course)...and when it comes to electronics, Lorenzo is the way to go
Vocals come from me, processed with the V-Synth Vocal Design card. Unfortunatly Lorenzo had got some problems removing some unespected noise on the femal voices, so we ended up leaving both my original unprocessed voice blended with proceed versions.
I agree the final "Amen" should have to be different, two days ago a teacher at the conservatory saw the score and saied he like it but the ending was a little too different from the starting mood and chords (too much "tonal"), I agree about that, and maybe the a-cappella version will be different.
I'm sure Lorenzo will love to read these comments, as we wanted to experience new ideas...hey guys, we're talking about one of the most important christian prays blended with electronic music, lots of people would slam the door in our faces, but you didn't, and appreciated the work...for me it means a lot, really thanks a million! _________________ Diego http://www.myspace.com/diegoinmusic

Slam the door, are you kidding? I love nothing better than someone who can blend styles and concepts and come up with something unique and original and exciting. And you 2 have done this to a remarkable level. Speaking for myself, you have some very open minded ears here and eager to hear any sort of interesting venues you can conceive of. This is some very impressive work. _________________ George Nelson is 2loose

Thanks a million, words like that encourage musicians to keep on make original music.
BTW, if you have any kind of criticism is more than welcome, it helps to get even better.

Wow - seriously impressive blending of styles - totally original. Man you've got some killer sounds integrated together - I am jealous!
The opening is theatrical - nice chords and tempo slow down to the vocals. I can't comment on vocals - its not my thing - but they sound great to me. Aghh - the light panning clicks freaked me out the first time I listened to it. Nice segway into the efx. section - cool machine sounds - really low bass rumble in there - feels good.
Wow - it is a movie sound track / intro piece.
Hmm ..... your music seems more organized and deliberate than mine ..... mine seems more loose / less refined. Hmm ....
At first I was thinking it was too short - but after a few listens i am thinking it is complete as is. One thing that might make it seem to short is that you've got 3 distinct sections - like 3 smaller tunes.

hi guys, just come back from a little kind of "vacation". Diego was a little too kind cos I spend some times on the piece, but I can say that I didn't wrote a single note for this one, what I've done here is just to create a kind of choral effects starting from 4 tracks of sang by Diego. In first I thought I could use midi to use the v-synth to process the voice, but the midi was only a draft, then Diego sang without following the metronome ( ) and I had to process the single line without midi signals to make the v-synth track using the internal pitch recognition of the machine to trigger notes. So my real work was to find the right ammount of compression for each track and to find the right choir sound for each lines (I should have spent more time on this task but as you know with this new work I have a lot of trouble to find the time to do anything else ). I hope to find the time to work again on the tracks to create a different choir effect cos the whole result is really a great composition (good work Diego!)

Another listen here...
And the vocal trak gets better...real serious sound with many excellent choral techniques in evidence...
The chord structure is also spot on and a nice and exciting sound...particularly at the slower end of the middle section for the voices....
The electronics and the later supervox sounds at the end cap it off well...but I would have liked to see a bit more vocal there....
Still enjoyin' it!!!!

Hey guys,
I'm so happy you appreciate that track!
This tune was born in very bad days for me, so these notes mean a lot for me, and the fact you appreciate it makes me feel you're near to me during bad days, really thanks a lot!
First I must thank Lorenzo, he says he didn't do nothing special, but his help is so precious, we talk a lot in the day, and he always makes me smile when I need, so he's really a friend for me!
Elll, thanks a lot for your words about choral techniques, I know you've been a choral conductor, so I'm happy you find it good!
I can send you the score if you want to give it a look (I'm still working on it to apply minor changes, but it's quite at a good stage!)
Sorry if I fogot to thank anyone, but I want you to know I appreciate all your listenings and comments!!!

Hi Diego and Lorenzo
This is very beautiful and VERY original. What an amazing effect you achieve by combining this text with electronic sounds.
You say your teacher found it too "tonal"....um....I can see what he means in that there are many tonal chords, but in combination with other notes, especially the bass notes, they are very full and rich and not just diatonic at all. I love the way the phrases build in tension, with all those lovely notes creating suspense, and then resolve.
Beautiful singing too - all your voice, Diego? Even the high notes?? or was that "female vox" ??
I would love to hear the a capella version of this - then all the notes of each rich and varied chord will really get heard.
Too tonal - what a load of @$#%$#!! You shouldn't take what your teacher says too seriously. He probably has his ipod full of Stockhausen and Cage |

Ahah, Dee, maybe you're right, but I totally trust him, he's a very good teacher
BTW, he appreciated a lot the composition, and just saied that THE ENDING chords are a little too tonal; considering the rest of the composition is a half way between modal and modern usage of modal harmony, and ending like this one could not keep justice to the rest of the piece...and I agree with that, in fact I'm working on the final "Amen" (won't touch the rest of the piece, I like it as is).
About voices, I sang all parts in my own range (can't do "falsetto" by myself), than given to Lorenzo who kindly processed inside the VSynth changing them to female voices.
