Hi!
I got the internal power supply and I installed it in the external case.
For my excess of zeal I added a fuse to avoid shorts and a 220V fan to reduce the thermal problems.
The power supply has a 7-pins output, then I used classical DB9 connectors. I suggest you to use a female feedthrough DB9 connector for the box! I had not it and I used a male one, but it's not safe!
Now the mixer is installed in our studio, thus I can't give you inside photos of the enclosure.
Good hack!

I realize I'm a year late to the party, but it's so refreshing to see the amazing work people have been doing to actually address the issues with this mixer towards the end of this thread. Too bad I had to wade through 10 pages of bickering, random conjecture, and straight vitriol to get to it.
Krono: Are you an electrical engineer? Some of your explanation has gone over my head but I understand you yanked out the power supply and hooked your own up. I've dealt with so many stability issues with my zero 4 over the years (it's actually calmed down with age and gotten more reliable), but everyone loves my mixer when it works and I've taken it to countless shows while biting nails. My thought was swapping the power supply as well.
... but with regard to the original purpose of this thread, did adding your new power supply improve the background noise at all? I always assumed it was badly shielded AC power that caused it but it seems to be bad DAC to blame. What about actually swapping the DAC devices with some other aftermarket ones? Total pipe dream?
Apart from the totally obvious solution of changing the gain structure of one's sound system to scale the "hiss" down, here is my contribution the the cause: Notch filters...
The hiss is not indicative of a poor signal to noise ratio. The Zero4's S/N is actually fine for me. The hiss is a series of discrete and very narrow resonating bands in the upper end of the audio spectrum, so they don't contribute to the power spectrum of the noise floor significantly, but are very audible. I have a project file where I was trying to recover a bad recording made through this mixer, and was able to drastically remove this noise by setting up no less than 6 different super narrow notch filters to remove these discrete components of the "hiss/screetch". Unfortunately, the problem is even more insidious because these bands slowly drift around and shift after a couple of minutes.
My hiss stops entirely when I get momentary brownouts in my house when the vacuum turns on or whatever. It also stops entirely when the firewire connection is being established. It's about a 0.5 second window when the PC is shaking hands with the mixer. Why is this?
Anyway I'm sleep deprived and rambling. Hope someone is still here! |
