I just don't really get your fixation on the synth waveforms. The actual waveforms don't really take up any ROM space AND don't really matter THAT much for the sounds you could make with them. Many analogs have only a few waveform types yet can sound vastly different depending on how you program the rest. If you're the type of person who cares that much about the difference in sound between a Jupiter 8 saw wave and a Minimoog ramp wave you really should be looking at AT LEAST a decent VA, yet then you say it's not important enough to you since you have software as well. It sounds to me like you're looking more for good synth sound presets, which has very little to do with the ROM size. My Moog Voyager has like 1100 presets and just a few waveforms.

But honestly, as critical and insistent you seem to be about this point, I really think you should consider spending the 40 bucks on the bus ticket. I don't think anyone's info or opinion on here is going to help you make your decision. So with that, I've effectively ended my own input Smile
Good luck!

If you're concerned about the synth sounds, they're decent, basic synth sounds, but nothing that can't be outdone by any of the 100s of free VST synths, which are much easier to set up, infinitely more configurable, and since you're not gigging, nearly as accessible.

Of all the sounds, I'd say they were a "weak" point, but the pianos, drums and the rest of the classical/orchestral instruments sound very good, as someone said; "software quality".

I'll caveat that by saying I'm comparing the synth sounds with some of the best NI stuff which I have sampled in the past, and also some similar but less shiny free synths ranging from basic moogy type clones, to bizzare special effects vsts.

If you want to browse through the preset list and choose maybe 10, I can run a couple of scales through them so you can get an idea of the sound.

Kurzweil pc3le6 is basically a rompler, not VA, although it does have a VA engine, it's not programable with that model. Also, kurzweil is widely known for having best orchestral sounds, you won't find any better, and that includes krome. Honestly, with all this gear you bought and returned, I'm afraid you will find something wrong with the krome and return it, since you have with m3 and extreme. Most people would rather have one of those boards then krome, although krome is still a very capable board. You said you were concerned about boot time on m3, but on krome its much longer from my knowledge, just under a minute cause of piano/drums. But I agree with others get a real VA. Access virus, korg Radias, waldorf blofeld, etc... Especially if you like programming, no need to keep dabbling in romplers if you keep returning them. No board is ever going to be perfect.

For the other posters besides Alesis and Kurzweil, can't forget about Dave smith instruments, MOOG, and the defunct Ensoniq and emu brands, for American companies.

It sounds like you're mainly concerned about presets. They don't have that much to do with the ROM size at all. I would suggest you keep looking for third party/after market/Krome enthusiast expansion packs. Don't worry if the ROM is the same as the M50. The available sounds don't have to be.

M3, 2 minutes boot time? Only if your uploading a bunch of samples from the get go. Standard, its not even close to that long, about 30-40 secs. I never said buy a PC3k, but you said you owned a PC3LE6 which essentially has the same "orchestral" sound set, and you sold it. PC3K just adds sampling and better on board editing. The basis of the whole PC3 series is for bread and butter sounds. I have a PC361, and an M3, so I have basis to talk. I dont use any computers for my production, Im completely out of the box so to say.

And yes, given your posts, Im an content in thinking you will eventually sell the Krome, because you will find something "small" wrong with it. All these boards youve had from the M3, to MOX, to the PC3LE are VERY capable of what your trying to achieve. For cheaper VA, how about Roland Gaia, Novation Mini/Ultranova, Korg MicrokorgXL, all will give you better synth sounds then M50/Krome, and is easily more programmable.

But honestly, it seems youve sold yourself on the Krome anyhow, so I guess just go with that. It has decent synth samples like the m50.

I see a Kronos 61 sold on ebay recently for $1625. If you are in any way particular about analog sounds, I would step up to that. I had PC3LE6 for 4 mos earlier this year and it was too V.A.S.T. for me! About as remote from programming an analog synth as you can get. I might have kept a PC361, since it has the faders and 16 dsp blocks instead of 10. The PC3LE sounded ok for the money, and the architecture was powerful, but bonkers IMHO.

At the rate Kronos prices are dropping, it's almost worth seeing if you can save up a bit more and get one of those.

I'll bear your points in mind, but I don't expect any after market expansions & my purchase won't be based on any such assumptions.

Thanks
