I have learned that the Chord control channel only recognizes MIDI input if you use the USB driver.

This way I can "drive" the backing accompaniment from a midi track in the DAW.

]It shouldn't make a difference at all. You can use either an Audio/Midi interface or a direct USB connection. In fact if you use the traditional 5 pin midi connection to an audio interface, you'll have a better connection too.

You would need to change the Clock sync option from Internal to External Midi in that case.

Fast forward to about 2:20

Yes, I understand. It *shouldn't* require the USB interface driver.

But it did for me. I was going nuts trying to figure out why the style engine was not listening to the control channel. I put it on USB and it started listening.

Unless there are another setting in Sonar X3 that I also changed that made it suddenly work.

If anyone is having a problem, try the USB midi interface. I *suspect* that it is the preferred interface, since it is recommended in the manual.

I just tried it in ProTools and it worked with and without the interface.

I'm sure it's a Sonar midi settings somewhere. With ProTools it's like this...if you go with direct USB connection, you get 2 virtual drives that you need to select in order to make that connection work. If you go the other way around, then you have to change the Midi I/O to the ones that go with the interface.

When you go with the interface, do you have a working midi connection between the two on regular midi channels?

As far as the program change messages go...never had Sonar, so I'm totally clueless about that, but with ProTools there isn't a separate setting or a control panel for it. It all happens in the same place where you do a basic program change on a midi channel....Say if you wanted to change a general midi piano sound to flute or something. That's the same exact same program change window that you assign all those other special messages. I wonder if it's the same thing with Sonar?

Oh I had standard Midi working fine for other channels. It's just that the control channels weren't listening.

I enabled the USB and used that connection to the control channel and started working. I thought I had everything set up the same as the standard MIDI, but who knows.

Anyway my main point is that if its not working for people they should try the USB because it was pretty easy to just change that track to use the USB MIDI driver, and then it started listening. It might have been something in Sonar, I don't know.

https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR%20X3&language=3&help=Beginners.05.html

Scroll all the way down to the last pic on this page.

I see a Bank Select and Patch select menu in there. There's some more drop down menus...I think those other midi messages that you're looking for are hiding somewhere in there. Be interesting to know...

If you found them, make sure to enter the messages as they're printed in the manual from L to R. Otherwise, they won't point to the exact bank...

Sam,

I can't find the style bank select codes for factory styles, or user styles, in the PA4X manual.

Is there a way of deducing them?

I don't think there is a list of midi messages for User banks. I'm sure we can figure it out.

As for the PA4x, Style Element change program messages are on Page 821.

Styles banks ....Page 930.

Yes, I had already seen that stuff, thanks. On page 930 those are not the Controller 0, Controller 32, patch numbers. Those are the numbers within the page. No way to tell what banks they are.

For example. look at the drum Kits or sounds list. There they list the program change numbers. But on the Styles and Keyboard sets, they do not list the program change numbers.

I will just experiment.

you're right! Not sure what's going on. Clearly they've changed the format...
