Posted: Mon Nov 07, 2016 1:36 am Post subject: Recording a Style to a DAW (Cubase Issue) via MIDI |
|
|
i am using Cubase 8.5 fir my DAW. I connected the PA4X via USB to my Windows based computer to the DAW. I setup the MIDI stuff on the PA4x. I sued someone's XML file I found on this site to setup the PA4X setup for cubase.
I then setup say 10 MIDI channels in the project. I recorded a style to Cubase. It recorded the MIDI info... then when ZI playback the MIDI info, it changed all of the origianl sounds on the PA4X, not only for that style, but for all styles. Luckily, my backup was not too old, but I restored all of patterns and sounds.
My question is... I would assume that the program changes to the sounds when recording the style would of occurred? and I would of assumed when played back through the DAW, the sounds should not be changed?
So, what is going on? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

After much time spent workign on this issue, this is what I think is going on....
Basically, the a correct PA4X XML file needs to be created. There is a PA3X file I found on the korg website, but not one for the PA4X.
What seems that needs to be altered is the CC and PC settings to the banks. This seems to be a little bit of work.
I may take it on, but first I will map the sounds of a preset style and then if thigns work.
The good thing is that the way I seyup Cuibase MID setup is correct, and I feel confident the way I setup the PA4X MIDI setup is correct...
Again, any feedback is appreciated... Most of all, if someone has a Pa$x file that is mapped would be great.

I found a PA4X xml file.. I think from this website...
Things are recording but not as I expected.
Maybe let me explain what I want to get done, so you may understand what my issue is..
I am trying to hookup the PA4X to a computer DAW like Cubsae 8.5. What I want then to do is plat styles and record on each separate MIDI track each individual sound. kind of like creating a sequence/song on the PA4X except capturing things in the DAW via MIDI notes on its own different tracks, so I thin may be able to mix other things from VSTs.
Right now what is oing on.. when I play a style, it seems it is tying to capture all channels on one MIDI channel, thus hearing all different sounds being played at the same time.
This makes me things that I am doing something wrong via MIDI setup somehwere..most likely oin the DAW and not the PA4X.
Again, any help is appreciated.

I think now I understand what you're trying to do. I thought you were trying to create a Style from scratch...but you just want to record the output of your keyboard but in midi format...with each track set to a separate channel.
Maybe you've set the midi channels in Cubase to accept data from ALL? I'm not familiar with Cubase, but in general you should be able to set every channel to receive midi from a specific channel.
Another option would be to record your chord progression in Sequencer Record mode and save IT as a midi file. Then simply import that midi file in Cubase. _________________ Sam

Sam.. thanks for your help.. that is correct as to what I am trying to do.. The other option you stated is a good one, but not as efficient. Let me look into the Cubase MIDI setup... I think you may be correct.
Thanks again.... |

Thanks again.... | Your solution in Cubase, after importing your Midi file, is "Dissolve Part".
You get the answer in this video in the first 3 minutes.
Good luck

Make sure the midi outputs on the keyboard are set up i.e. 9-16 for drums-acc5. Then add system exclusive and program changes to your midi in filters. Control changes added in the DAW must match not only the compatible control channels but also the control value range. If you need a protools session for style programming id be happy to share _________________ Ari Pearl Music

I never found useful information about CUBASE - MIDI issues. I really want to learn how to create STYLE via Cubase. If explainations could be simple and line by line I think I can fix some problems during create STYLE.
When I try to create STYLE in Cubase and load in Pa4x I dont get success. So I try to create STYLE in Pa4x and load in Cubase for fixing. I get success but limited: When I try to change guitar sound from Pa4x, Cubase only plays one time this new guitar and back to first guitar again. So I cant change sounds.
Other thing is Guitar Strum problem. I couldnt get any success about hearing and fixing Guitar Strum. Cubase doesnt give me Strum sound even I recorded in Pa4x...
To explain these issues and fixing is not easy with sentences.
Things that i want to learn:
1. If I dont have XML file (for Pa4x), Cant I create STYLE with Cubase?
2. I made settings like in the pics in Pa4x. Do I need another settings in Pa4x or in Cubase?

There is a much easier way.... Go to global-midi and set the preset to studio control. Make sure your midi in filters include system exclusive and program changes. Turn on Note to RX noise so you can use strums on guitar channels. Set the midi out channels to match the midi in channels so you can use the keyboard keys to record what you want. Open style record.
In the DAW you want to create 9 midi tracks (1 for upper 1 and 8 tracks for the style) name all the tracks and add controllers 1,10,64,71, and 74 to each channel if you want
1-modulation
10-pan
64-damper
71-resonance
74-cutoff
Then set the midi outputs of the tracks to 9-16 following the order drums-acc5
Choose the sounds you want to use in style record
Test each channel by recording something in the daw one at a time and playing it back. Then save the style so it has the sound layout and mix you want saved. When you finish programming the style bounce each variation as a multitrack midi. When you import the midi into the style do not click initialize midi.
You will only be able to control the sounds of the style from the DAW while in style record _________________ Ari Pearl Music

Thanks for reply I tried this way but it didnt work. I just stuck in first step. Studio Control preset set channels like this:
9- Drum
10- Bass
11- Percussion
12/16- Acc1-Acc5
And this is not Korg series line. When I set 9-Bass, 10-Drum, 11-Percussion 12-16-Acc... I can hear properly. But I cant work on it.
When I put filters Midi in as Sys exclusive and Prg. change. Everything goes worse in Daw. I get weird sounds.
I have stomacahe because of this If I learn this one day. I think I will prepare a document for people with easy steps.
I asked one question: Do I have to get Pa4x XML file for creating STYLE in Cubase? |

Check your midi cables it sounds like the inputs and outputs are swapped because a midi in filter on the 4x will not effect the midi recording in any DAW _________________ Ari Pearl Music

I connected with midi cables.
First cable is connected like this: From Pa4x (midi out) to Audio Interface (midi in) to play notes.
Second cable is connected like this: From Audio Interface (midi out) to Pa4x (midi in) to hear sounds.
Still wrong? |
