Did anybody noticed that GM programs and kits are not as good as on previous models? So far,i had to change some of them on several styles.for example GM standard kit, which doesn't sound as on previous models,i used standard kit 1 instead. Also some GM Distortion gt and quite some more sounds......I am thinking of exporting the GM sounds of my Pa800 and overwrite the ones on Pa4x somehow, but I am not sure if pa4 has all the internal waveforms of pa800 and the fault is just the reprograming of the sounds on pa4x,or actually are missing waveforms, and this is what causes the sounds to be week compared to older models

That's interesting and also a coincidence that just an hour ago I played a superb professionally created MIDI which I had previously recorded with vocal and harmonies.
The MIDI played fine and the harmonies kicked in correctly BUT the GM sounds were so different - even my singer noticed and questioned whether it was a different MIDI.

So yes - I noticed it tonight!!

Cheers

Being new to Arranger Keyboards this is something that surprised me, why have inferior sounds in the GM banks for accompaniament when the keyboards main sounds are better, why don't they just use all the best quality sounds?

It is not always about better sounds or not,it is also an arrangement thing, how the style were recorded before(dynamics, expression etc).
Maybe the GM sounds themselves are better ,I don't know but they don't sound as we programmed them on styles.
That means that we have to change the way we used to make the orcestrations on styles using these sounds,or we have to re-assign those sounds to better PA4X' sounds, not GM bank....
Maybe they try to eliminate GM/GS in near future, and that's a way to lead the whole thing as they want...who knows

I already remapped most if not all my styles that were using Standard GM kit before, but at least they should leave the hihat the same for all those empty Cv's where there was a hihat count in on empty staves Smile

I really miss a distortion guitar performance I used, sounds really bad now ,I think I will load some GM sounds and overwrite the ones on PA4

I guess I am never gonna sell my Roland Canvas SC-88 Pro......GM/GS on this machine plus those amazing EFX's are still far away from everything else

They already drop samples/multisamples from older products and that's really a shame (see here)

Yeah,i guess you're right.....Sometimes I feel my Pa800 is puncher than my Pa4x,but pa4x is super crystal clear I admit that.Anyway, right now the only thing I hope for the moment is someone from Korg to tell us if they are one the way or not for a major OS' update, cause I don't want to loose half the season with pa4x resting at home. It's been 7 months now I got the keyboard,it's time to payback what it costed....
Can't do that if pa4 is still so bugy, not trusted for live gigs

My own take on this scenario is that GM sounds are an effort to bring a simple starting point when using SMFs. On some products the results are good on others no so good. Before GM or GS or XG you could load up and Midi file and find a set of Bagpipes on the drum track or Bassoon on the Bass Track as back then different manufacturers had different ways of laying our their soundbanks.

Therefore I always treat a SMF with GM sounds as a starting point and on a product like the Pa4x it only takes minutes to get the scene set as you want so for me I never really use the GM banks as I edit any tracks if they are GM based. Additionally the variables between different manufacturers GM banks are enough that some tracks might sound very good right through to sounding pretty lacklustre.

GM Standard kit used to have some other kick and snare that were missing from all other kits. These sounds, some at least are now in standard 1 kit,but for someone who used that GM kit in the past, means he has to remap all styles again.same thing for other sounds, with no reason.
Usually someone would expect better GM soundbank on newer models, but everything shows that by making GM banks worst, the other soundbanks sound even beter I guess....we will see

I use GM sounds and drumkits in styles, whenever needed for a success reproduction of whatever I try to accomplish. It doesn't have to do really with the sound quality, but with what is better in the mix,or with the illusion of playin technics of the certain style or Performance if that GM sound is used in a performance. It is the feeling and what you want to archive each time, and there quite few times that these sounds can do that.....
Couldn't find that loose playin'snare sound on other drumkit, that's a fact!!!!

Don't mean to bring back an old thread, but just noticed that I had a few custom styles that were mapped to Standard Kit GM on the PA3X, and it sounds very different now on the PA4X.

Is there any way to import the old Standard Kit GM from a PA3X to a PA4X?
Or is there any other kit that I should be remapping it to on the PA4X?

Thanks!

Personally, I'd like a new feature that's a simple pointer (alias) so I could re-route the instruments to the newer samples without having to change and/or save the factory GM Sounds. It's not rocket science. If I can do it with my DAW or MIDI-Ox, surely the Korg Engineers could do the same.

Hi Korg1:

About what you said of midi file and GM, in some way i must agree with you.-
As you i still have the pais SC88-Pro & MC50 Mkii (both stored carefully on their boxes).- If what you want to reproduce is commercial or proffesional midi files, you are right, because most of them were made of standard GM/GS sounds.-

But without no more effort you can addapt to some other engines.-
I do that with some orchestral files made in gm that i tweaked to be played on Kronos, and really sounds better.-

I've not experience that upgrade on PA4x, but next month i will do.-
I don't feel any difference between drum kits on different PA.- As i don't have differents PA at the same time, my comparission becomes from reproducing the same song recorded on MP3, and on both cases (PA3xle and PA4x, drum sets sounds equally.- They are not grate but you can use sampled drum kits that really sounds better.-

Just an opinion.-
With regards.
Eduardo

I just noticed some specific sounds of drumkit not sound ok,no prob,i can change the whole style to use another drumkit, but what i want to point here is that it would be nice if pa4x could automatic remap that old standard GM kit,to the std kit 1 (i think it is...),
so we dont have to re-edit each style, since there are not big differences, but that snare of standard GM KIT, was something that we cant find it in the new GM kit,but it exist somehow at the stdrd 1 kit .

That is just an example, there are similar examples for program sounds as well or for fx 's and routings too....
