What type of response do you get when hitting the drum?

Hello everyone - just got a used WD-X yesterday (with the original head with some "pilling" of the layer of the head).

My question is this: while I fully expect the Wavedrum to not have the response of a gum rubber practice pad or a mesh head (thank god), I was hoping it resembled more of a snare drum response. However, my Wavedrum seems to have a LOT of "give" to it, especially when hitting in the center of the drum in which case the stick pretty much had no bounce and goes dead (note I did tighten up the lugs a bit). So much so that it was very hard to do an open roll, let alone a buzz roll. It reminded me of using one of these REMO or MoonGel practice pads http://remo.com/products/product/practice-pad where you hit it and you get very little bounce or it feels like it's sinking into the head.

Let me know what kind of response you get. It could be that the head is old, not tight enough, or that's just the response I'm going to get because that's how it's made.

Either way it's still an amazing unit.

Thanks!

Yeah, that's just how it is. The relationship between the head and the pressure sensor makes for a pretty dead stick response.

Follow the manual's instructions for tuning and calibrating the head to make sure you're getting optimal response, but it'll *never* feel like an acoustic drum, because it's not.

replace the original paper quality skin ,
A Remo Ambassador or the black one are recommended.
maybe a better recommendation, someone ?

when you do that, you can see yourself , why theres no rebound.
you could open 3 screws and remove the plastic shield with the rubber mat on top

this gives you the maximum rebound, but you loose pressure sensivity

Ebony suede; the surface texture is similar to the stock head, and lasts much, much longer.

Thanks everyone for your great input! I also heard from Joe Russo of the Benevento-Russo Duo that the Remo Fiberskyn 3 works well too. Not sure if the response is any better than the Ebony Suede or Ambassador but I'll experiment.
