This looks interesting and refreshing from the early indications... it certainly sounds to have great depth... I think this will generate a lot of interest and nice to see a new development like this in the higher end keyboard sector.. I will certainly be spending some time in the stores trying this one out.

The biggest handicap for this synth is its price.
If you add VAT to the US retail price this synth will sell for well above the 4000 Euros mark.
For that price you get a bi-timbral 8-voice stereo polyphonic synth with 3 small displays and a 5-octave keybed.

Then again, this synth is not designed to be just a sample player with stacks of polyphony, but it uses deeply sampled libraries as the sound source for synthesis purposes in an analog signal path, and going by what I have heard thus far the sound is unique.

I wonder what technology is used for the sample sets, disk streaming, or maybe some kind of flash ROM like Yamaha?
On the site of 8DIO it says 'instant load time' for the included sample content, and if you have ever worked with large sample libraries you know that instant load time does not apply.

Price is never a handicap, if people really really want this, they will pay.
And the price makes it kind of exclusive.
Which often makes it even more wanted.

Its in the same pricerange as
-Korg Kronos
-Nord stage
-Waldorf Quantum
-Yamaha Montage

So its not as extreme as the Oasys once was.

I think if you combine it with Omnisphere 2.5/keyscape
Which has hardware synth integration,
You are all set for the next decade.

Of course it is.
Or do you really think that someone who wanted a GX-1 or a Synclavier back in the days could ever have afforded one if they had to make ends meet with a minimum wage?
If price is an issue (and it is for most people) then other considerations have to be made, such as the specifications of one vs. the other.
Price never is an issue for those with a comfortable income and money to spare.

4 layers a patch now as well, that is fantastic news. I always hated only having two.

Double mod slots as well, very nice.

Well, to some extend you could overcome that by using the harmony feature
But this indeed is way way better...

If they made an option for the standalone omnisphere to be a VST host too... using VST’s in multi’s. But also using them instead of an oscilator/sample. The omnisphere would be great for any keyboardist (also keep keyscape in mind)

Somehow this implementation of hardware/software integration feels better then NKS or VIP..

When you look at the grand picture, its clear to me that omnisphere is trying to archieve the same thing (and more) as 8dio is doing with their cooperation with Dave Smith..

And i think i like spectrasonics idea even better... each hardware synth you connect gives you a different workflow and options... its quite brilliant..

Everything I've heard so far sounds amazing. That being said, I still wouldn't drop 4 grand on this synth. If it were a workstation with a VST host, sure, but not a closed synth.

I'd take Onmisphere or NI Komplete over any synth on the market right now without fail.

Sharp.

I can recommend going over to 8DIO's YouTube channel and check out the videos demonstrating the Prophet X.
It sounds fantastic and unique.
Apparently there's a server grade SSD built in for storing the sounds, and the indepth sampling of the different instruments alone makes a huge difference when compared to the usual ROM found in today's synths and workstations.
Unfortunately when comparing hardware with software, there's still this great divide in quality and depth of dedicated libraries and the hardware way of stuffing as much as possible in as little memory as possible.
Likewise, there's also still a big difference in the interface in favor of hardware.
Maybe a hint for KORG's next workstation to bridge the gap?
