I am a fan of this EXS

I am working on an original which screams for a great sax part.

Without a doubt SOP saxes are the way to go. Realism, punch, articulation , expressiveness, growl, breath, its all there.

GregC – thanks a lot for your comment. For me the most important thing in all this hard work is the final satisfied user.
Developing the EXs sound library is a tedious process, which takes from several even up to dozen or so months. To create this particular library - EXs 177, I invited a few musicians. As I found out later, sound of saxophone is affected and shaped not only by just an instrument as such, but also by the musician, grade of mouthpiece and even the time of saxophone playing – warmed up instrument, after one hour of play or longer, sound much better. After processing of recorded material and programming sounds on Kronos, I put a lot of effort to do it the way to avoid any undue interference into original sound /sample, so not to loose the naturalness, authenticity in final effect as well as to preserve that kind of unpredictability that is so important in sound of that unique instrument as saxophone. Therefore I am very glad, that my library meets the requirements of professional musicians. Thanks a lot !

Greetings

The Baker Street Demo has a great sound, but the pitch bends are not realistic. That's the hardest part of recording saxophones. In my opinion, pitch bends on a sax should never be more than a quarter step. I work hard to make my sax parts sound realistic.

Here is an example. Let me know what you think:

The sax parts are at the 1:29 2:37 and 3:01 marks

I am totally with you on having realistic sax parts.

We are going to run into limits using a keyboard + joy stick

I would prefer going to the original Baker St to see
how the sax is played:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm8uxthkruk

Bottom line, with that ' note bend', the sax player
calls it a scoop [?} at 3:08

Its tricky to nail it using the Joystick. The standard
note bend range is 2 notes [ many refer to semi tones]

I agree - it sounds too bendy in SOP's demo of Baker St.
But thats not due to the sample- its the keyboard player
likely using Joystick + Y or -Y

Possibly using ribbon would be more realistic- I haven't
tried that.

Bottom line, IMO, the ROLI controller is giving us
more realistic expression than a keyboard. ROLI
is on my shopping list since I enjoy acoustic instrument
realism.

When I do my sax parts, I record it with no scoops (or I step record it) then add all of the pitch bends in manually and adjust the attack and everything manually. I'd like to think they turn out OK

Your sax work is tasteful. I also prefer slight bends which add to realism.

Your mixes are perfect to my ear and the sax parts are convincing.

$128 USD seems expensive! Does anyone know if there is a discount available?

Definately great sounding..

But where am i going to find room for them, my kronos is allready fully loaded, no room to spare...

Maybe Korg can take care of this in a software upgrade..
Just by allowing people to choose different boot images a startup..
And an easier way to manage the data inside the Kronos..

Which will probably not happen with the current Kronos,
But might be something for a replacement..

We can have custom PCG files. Thats close to your ' boot image '.

Most of us are maxed out on banks, for sure. we have griped about that constraint for some years. Since nothing has happened, its difficult to be optimistic.

I agree, about data mgmt being cumbersome. On mac so PCG tools does nothing for me.

All of this and other suggestions have been discussed routinely. There was a glimmer of hope for 1 more update when our Kronos FB mod visited Korg HQ.
At least , that was his takeaway. We all know about NDA's.

My 'patience ' goes thru 1/31/19. On that date. I accept 'what is ' and make my gear plans for a few years.

January 31, 2019 has come and gone. What are you future plans now? I don't own a KRONOS, but have drooled over them for years and played them in stores. I was this close to purchasing the new SE, but being that it's been what, 8 years since the first KRONOS, I'm so tempted to sit idle until a potential successor, which none of us know will ever happen or not.

I addressed this elsewhere. What we have with Kronos is all we can Realistically expect for some time. I note that Korg did provide some support to long Kronos owners; the OS update and some new EXs.

Kronos is not simply a tech gadget. Its not a 'collectible'.

Its a keyboard that inspires and provides
years of enjoyment. This is why most folks buy a Kronos or an SE.

if you are inspired by Kronos and have music production plans, then its your call what to do.

If the age of the components gets in the way of your enjoyment, there are other non similar choices that are cheaper. for example, folks seem to like the MODX. Its not a true Kronos alternative. It seems like another enjoyable keyboard.

If this helps any, even the 1st gen Kronos[2011] is holding its value here in the US. a used 61 can be found for $1500, and 88 for $1800. These are estimates as of this week. When the marketplace places value on a 8 year old keyboard that should tell you something.

For my future plans, which are 100% subjective, I am looking at Orchestra sample Libs and VST's. From there, external FX and possibly the ROLI. I also have lots of integration to do with Omnisphere, Keyscape and Cubase. IOW, I am keeping what I have and building from there.
