Hey, guys.

Booted the Kronos this morning and the red progress bar hung at about 10% with a message that the system startup failed. It recommended unplugging any USB devices (none were connected) and rebooting. I did, and the second time it came up without issue.

This is a new unit purchased a few months ago and has the latest & greatest version of the OS. It's not exhibited any problems before this.

Has anyone experienced this problem?

While it may boot the next 100 times without issue, the fact that it failed with no particular catalyst is obviously cause for concern. If something is failing I'd like to find out what, especially while it's still under warranty.

I do realize with computers, "stuff happens," but I'd be grateful for any insights from those who have seen this error in the past.

Hi Chris. I recall that you are a studio musician.

My guess is that it did not like the power when you booted up the 1 time. Check cables, power strips, UPS. Your K2 requires solid consistent power conditions.

For example, if you are blasting AC at the same time of boot up, your K2 might be jealous Wink

Hey, Greg.

That makes sense in context. I keep the K2 on an APC UPS. We had some storms a couple of days ago, and one of my other UPSes started complaining about the battery until I cycled the power on it, then it was happy again. Even though the K2 UPS was off, perhaps it got jiggled a little by the storm and came up funky the first time.

If that's all it is I'm much more relaxed about it, as computers do get snippy about power from time to time and at it's heart, the K2 is just a Linux PC.

Thanks, man.

Just a Linux PC careful many in here will find that offensive 😁 because for some reason that is a downgrade comment even though the most powerful DAW run on PC confusing eh?
I also have a "proper" keyboard a Montage who is probably running on organic processors and some sort of voodoo motherboards nor like a Kronos yuck

Can't imagine why that would be offensive. UNIX style operating systems are badass. Lock a high powered PC in a dark broom closet with a DX-7, let nature take its course, and the offspring can be quite impressive. Very Happy

Linux PC is partially correct.

Of course, Kronos is much more than a Linux PC - which can be bought for $130
at Wal Mart Smile

Hey, if Walmart PCs could do what my K2 can, I'd buy all my gear from them!

I bought a new Kronos 2 and it failed with this kind of message, every other boot up.
I changed it and the new one has never failed.
You say it is still under warranty. Might be an idea to swap it if it happens again. If non of the other suggestions work, then it won't cure itself.

I posted about this before. I have purchased 2 new K2's and they both have had this problem. They are both on ups and both on different electrical grids, so I don't think that the power issue is the problem. On facebook kronos enthusiast workshop channel you will find others that are just as baffled as you and I. My K1 had this 'system startup' message also, but that turned out to be a legitimate problem and needed a new motherboard.

I read every post of K problems here and on Facebook.

There are about 20 trouble shooting steps for the K.

I know this kind of sucks but its just not always 'simple ' .

The problem with defective K2's is not epidemic. I am
fairly confident of this.

I would really like to see what goes on, real life, with these
issues. I am not 100% confident we are getting the full story
all the time.

I accept what you are saying. But I am curious and would
have liked to have seen both boards.

For everything else on the Internet, I think the full story and all the facts are important. And its more fair.

Its possible the Kronos Original Atom Processor CHIP
had a "Virus-Malware-Flaw" , that subsequently effected concurrent Future O.S/Firmware updates.

Rumor has it , that the malware is "Activated", when Multiple Features are functioning Simultaneously.

example : sequencer/sampler/wave file/fx/master-fx/write-to-disk/save/export.

Not everyone uses ALL the features combined, so possibly avoid the malware activation.

that is very interesting. I use the SEQ all the time, which includes most of the features.

My K, is 7 yrs old. I have no way of knowing when this nasty virus inserted
itself into the Atom processors.

However, your report is most interesting in one context- why no OS updates
for 16 months for the K.

This malware/virus might be a contributor to the OS silence and the reports
we occasionally read about the K2.

Just the same, its not epidemic.

Another theory.
