Hi all! I'm looking for a way to setup a Combi in a korg (kross 2 or microStation) that uses both it's internal sound and an external sound module for leads on a different channel AND control this Combi from a keytar...
Connections would be:
keytar midi out - korg in
Korg out - external module in
I can't manage to get the keytar messages past thru the korg, even if on same midi channel.
Is there a way to do this?
I considered to buy a thru box, but i would lose the Combi features for that external module (velocity and key layering). If using a thru box i thought about setting up the module on channel 2 and swap channels within the keytar in order to play the korg or the module, is there a way I could play both when needed?

I'd appreciate any light on this!

JJ

Hi,

I'm afraid there is little light to shed for the Kross...

The Kross has no capabilities for MIDI THRU functionalities.
The best that can be achieved is that your keytar triggers the arpeggiator in the Kross and that the Arpgeggiator is sending notes to the external module.
That is working for sure. What I did not try is whether it is possible to load in the Arpeggiator a pattern which is basically just repeating the triggered note once (instead a whole generated sequence).

Using a through box. Mmmh...
1. The Kross and the external module use the same MIDI channel and your keytar has additional switches to send CC messages. The Kross and external module get set up in such a way that they have a separate CC message to get muted. You can then mute one or the other, both or none.
2. The Kross runs a combi, where a program is mapped twice. Once on the same channel as the external module and once on another channel. By switching channel on the keytar you can both or the Kross only.

Additional programmable MIDI equipment in between the keytar and the Kross and Module may a way out, but I've no reference or experience with it. (Well I do in fact, but that is homebrewed using Arduino...)

Have fun

Thank you for your reply OpAmp! Actually I liked both ideas, and I will try them for sure.

Thank you for keeping this forums alive also! You enlighten us with accurate and creative ideas on each post. Much appreciated.

Cheers,
JJ
