What would be nice is a per note editing, to adjust volume, velocity response and tone of individual notes in an SGX-2 piano. This would help make some great pianos more usable by supporting a broader range of playing styles. E.g. Jazz, pop and rock soloing often requires a much stronger emphasis of the C4 c5 range than classical or ballad styles need. Also a general point would be that the German grands are all set up with overly quiet ppp range samples. It is currently very difficult to adjust the SGX2 settings to fix this.
If you could adjust these issues on specific notes, just like you can on the Kurzweil Forte, Kawai MP7se and MP11se and Roland Rd2000. It would transform the Kronos into an almost unbeatable piano simulator.
If you’re serious about piano you’ll want these facilities and with the Kronos because the actual sample quality and velocity levels are so good, it demands the best in editing facilities. That’s an individual note editor. |

I accept not everyone plays the piano the same or has the same level of expectations, just like one mans Hammond clone is another’s plastic organ.
For me and many others Korg’s over simplification of edit controls on the SGX2 engine is a barrier to perfection. Actually individual note adjustment is not overkill, from experience it is exactly what is needed. Unfortunately using a Combi is a kludge. I didn’t bother to mention it here because I assumed it was well understood as not capable of delivering the kind of fine adjustment quality piano simulators normally provide. First you’ve limited to the number of adjustments (16), second it isn’t a tidy program solution, instead it drags subtle adjustment of a single instrument into a completely different sphere. Finally it also stops you from combining your piano with the other sounds you may need for the song.
I have made use of splitting the keyboard within the program and assigning two Ex SGX2. This helps a little for things like a simple boost to notes above C4 and in keeping the program setup in one place but it’s too blunt to allow the adjustment of individual notes.
And that’s where it fails. In fact the HD1 engine provides better control and adjustment for pianos than SGX2.
Since the Kronos is capable of delivering the best pianos, it really ought to provide the best editing for them. |
