EXs1/2 will be compressed without loosing sound-quality.

Reading that on Korg.de has put a bad taste in my mouth, I'm sorry but "Loss Free Compression" doesn't sit comfortably with me especially when talking about the Oasys. Surely compression is compression, something is being reduced, please excuse my ignorance if this isn't quite the case but quality is something that shouldn't be compromised on this Instrument as it's one of the key features that sets in apart from the competition. I don't mean to put a negative spin on this thread, but that statment has me concerned.

No, lossless compression is in fact what it says. Granted, I have no clue on how it's solved one the Oasys (in the update that's soon to come).
But at the moment EXs are loaded at start up, even tho it's not very likely that you are gonna use every singel sample. So, one possibility is that samples will be loaded as compressed data initially (taking less ram) and then being decompressed when some program/combi is using a particular sample. This would free some RAM, on the other hand if the problem is Harddrive space then it would be enough to do some lossless compression on the sample data and decompress/load it as normal during the bootup.

Anyway, just my guesses. But compression does not have to lead to soundartifacts.

No, here's what lossless compression is. Let's say the sample looks like this, in binary: 1000000001111000001. With lossless compression it's translated into something like 1-8x0-4x1-5x0-1 (ok, it wouldn't quite look like that but you get the idea). Every single bit of the original data is still there, but less memory is required to store it.

Lossy compression, on the other hand, approximates what the original data is and therefore you get some reduction in quality.

Lossless compression doesn't give you anywhere near the space saving of lossy compression, but I think you can maybe get a 30% reduction or so in size/space relative to the original.

Didn't the Trinity use Lossless compression at 2:1 ?

Me too Peter. Very Happy

I'm assuming the "7" in the name is a nod to the DX-7, right?..

As usual Wink I agree to your both postings (curve & RC)! Laughing

But in a few hours we will know more and it will make speculation obsolete. Anyway, I am looking forward... defenitely!

People, if you wanna figure out what lossless compressed sound is all about look into FLAC, that's a Free Lossless Audio Codec and it really is lossless you can't figure out the difference at all. And the compression is 50% I'm not kidding you, what is 40mb wav is compressed to some 20/22(tops)mb FLAC.

But since all of you are all musicians you most likely know what FLAC is already Wink
