|
|
Hey!
Yesterday I was jamming with my friends. We had drums, a couple of guitars, a bass, vocal and I was playing an upright piano. I had a microphone taped inside the piano, but it wasn't still loud enough (microphone feedback was easy to come when adding the volume). Suddenly I came out with a crazy idea. What if I'd install electric guitar-like pickups under the strings!? How would it sound?
Of course it raised a lot of questions, thoughts and problems.
Which is the cheapest and easiest way to get such amount of pickups? A guitar has only six strings, piano's got 88 keys and even more strings. I don't have money to buy a truckload of guitars and use their electronics. I know that some decades ago, when musical instruments were very hard to get hold of, musicians used to build electric guitars themselves and used some part from a telephone machine as a pickup. It was the speaker probably, I don't know exactly.
Which type of pickup should I use, magnetic (like in electric guitars) or piezo (like electro-acoustic ones)? What will be the sound difference?
Yamaha CP series pianos should be something like that. Could the sound be compared with them?
Will the feedback be a big problem?
Sorry if this topic is not suitable for this forum. It's not about a synth, but still an electric keyboard instrument..
Any suggestions, questions or comments? Please go ahead. |

There is a company called Barcus Berry That I believe have a couple options for this application. They may be Piezo pickups.

Thank you, that's interesting. A bit expensive, though, but at least I know where to try to put a pickup. Tomorrow I'll experiment with my friend's electroacoustic guitar's electronics.
Any ideas where to get a cheaper solution or how to build one?
EDIT:
Okay, some googling and finally I found this: http://cigarboxguitars.com/workshops/Pickup_Workshop.php
I will definitely try this out. Just a simple question - in case I use multiple magnets, will I have to use parallel or series connection to connect them to the output jack and amplifier? |
