There have been a few questions about preparing set lists and renaming voices (Programs and Combinations), so here are the step-by-step instructions for doing it using the provided Computer Editor. They have been written for the X50 and Windows XP, but will probably work much the same for the MicroX. These instructions will work for Program or Combination Mode.

If you have not yet set up your X50 with the computer, please download the latest USB driver and X50 Editors for your Operating system.

January 2, 2010 update: There is an updated Flash ROM available for X50 and Micro X that provides a 'Favorites" function. This will allow you to quickly store your favorite Combi's and Programs in one place for quick access. You'll need to install the latest USB Midi driver before performing the upgrade.

Updated link:
http://www.korg.com/SupportResults.aspx?productid=253 (Select the 'Downloads' tab)

1. Load the latest USB driver and X50 Editor software.
2. Connect the X50 to the computer with a USB cable.
3. Turn on the X50 and launch the X50 Editor. The program will sync with the X50 and will dump the Program and Combination parameters of the X50 into the computer editor.
a. Note - you have to get this working first before going on.

Let’s save the current selection of Programs and Combis in your X50 BEFORE you proceed with the instructions below. You will always have this file to refer back to later on.
1. Click Utility
2. Click Save in the drop down dialog
3. The standard Windows File ‘Save As’ Dialog box pops up.
4. Give your file a name (something like ‘Factory Settings’ plus a date, or some name you will recognize later.
5. Pick a location and Save the file. It will be a good idea to keep all of your X50 Editor files in this same location, so you may want to make a unique subdirectly for them.

When you have done this, you can now safely alter any editable parameters, and rename and/or relocate any Program or Combination as required.
1. Click Program or Combi in the upper left of the editor.
2. Click on the Browser tab
3. Select the Bank letter that contains a sound or combi you want to move.
4. In the right panel, Navigate to the sound and DOUBLE click on it. You should see the same program or combi change on your X50.
5. Click on the Utility tab
6. Click on 'Write Program' in Program mode, or on 'Write Combination' in Combi mode. It's the top selection in the drop down menu.
7. A new box will pop up showing the category and name you have selected (number 1 and 2).
8. If you want to rename a Program or Combination, DOUBLE click in box 2 now. Gray shading will appear behind the letters. Use your Computer’s keyboard to type whatever name you’d like. Take care not to get too wordy.
9. Using your mouse, go to selection number 3, entitled “Choose Destination and select the Bank letter location you want to move that program or combi to.
a. Please note that whatever Program or Combi that is already at that location will be displayed.
10. Click in the box below that will show whatever Program or Combi is located in that spot when you fired up your X50. When you have properly selected this box, it will have a red boarder around it.
11. Now use your computer’s Up or Down Arrow keys to navigate to the location you want to copy the Program or Combi listed in box number 2.
12. When you find the spot you want, click OK to proceed.
13. If you are sure, click on OK.

Now that you have moved things around, you need to save this Editor session. As you did before…
1. Click Utility
2. Click Save in the drop down
3. The standard Windows File ‘Save As’ Dialog box pops up.
4. Give your file a name (something that relates to the changes you made, or a date)
5. Pick a location and Save the file.

A few hints:
1. After you do this a few times you will realize that you have to plan ahead. Also, keep in mind that you can factory reset the X50 to reload all the factory settings, so you can always go back.

2. Go to the Korg website and download the available PDF files. You may want to print out the ‘Voice Name List’ file. It has all the factory names and locations for everything. http://www.korg.com/SupportResults.aspx?productid=253

3. Figure out which Programs or Combi’s you may never use. (remember, you can get them back later if you want) as use these locations as your ‘scratch pad’ locations.

Have fun and experiment – just be sure to save any changes you want to keep as UNIQUE file names.

Bob

I can use helpfull advice / shortcut ideas... with re-writing some of my own patches and setting up an "On the Job" set of maybe 50-ish Patches rather than sifting through 560 on stage. I'd appreciate any tips. I realize my own experience will help the most... but any killer patches you want to share or short-cuts for "live on the job" quick changes would help .... I appreciate it.

Does anybody know how the "Favorites" function works? Because I can't punch in the numbers fast enough to make some quick program changes.

@Ryham

What model r u using? X50 or Micro?

In X50, u need software ver1.0.1 or 1.0.5 to save ur favorite program/combi from 1 to 0 for quick recall.

1. Select the Program/Combi you want to save.
2. Hold down the [–] button and press the numeric button [1] (to save your selection to button 1). The selected program will be registered to the numeric button [1]. A message indicating that the registration has been completed will be shown as long as you hold down the numeric button.
3. Repeat same procedure until u fill up all buttons 1-0.
Note:
When you re-register a program or combination to a previously-registered numeric buttons, the previous setting will be overwritten.

Here’s how to recall a program or combination you’ve registered.
1. Press the [./HOLD] button 3x to make the “FAVORITES” indication appear. The Favorites function will be turned on.
2. Make sure that “Program Select” or “Combi Select” is selected.
3. You can press the numeric button [1] to select the registered program immediately. Similarly, you can press the numeric button [2] to select the registered combination.

Note:
The Favorites Setup settings are preserved even when the power is turned off. You don’t need to write (save) them.
Note:
If the Global “Power On Mode” is set to Memorize, the on/off state of the “FAVORITES” indication (i.e., the on/off status of the Favorites function) will be preserved the next time you turn on the power.

Hope it helped you.

But what about the cominations referring to the changed programs? Once you changed some programs every combination using a changed sound will not work anymore??

@kasmot
I would like to ask the same question about the Micro X
There was an adendum in the box when i got it refering to this but i can't find it & as usual, Korg has neglected to ad the extra info into the online documentation.
Any help with this would be apreciated as i have a performance coming up & i really need to use the favorites fuction.

Cheers

Here is a list of all Korg X50 Programs, and which Combis use them, in the factory default setup.

With this list you should be able to pick Programs for your own use which are not used by any factory Combis. Note that there are quite a few Progs which are not used by ANY Combis.

This was not an easy list to make. Please let me know if you find any errors!

Hello,

I play the Korg x50 in a small band, I have a manual but I didn't find any words about how to programming a sound to 1 to 10 buttons.
There are 10 buttons on the right side of the keyboard, marked with numbers. I will have a gig soon, and I need to know, how can I assign a sound to a button (1st button - organ, 2nd - piano etc) I should change the sound of the banks fast during the gig.

Sorry, but my native language is not english, hope you understand my problem.

Thanks for the clear answer.

Thanks for the clear answer.

Balázs

I guess with the editor or on the synth itself you can copy programs (or combis) from one location to another.

I assume the 10 buttons are just to select numbers, e.g. for selecting program or combi A000, A001 etc to A127 (I assume).

FAVORITES does this (only in latest ROM version).

TO DESIGNATE PROGs/COMBIs as your FAVORITES:

Select a PROG/COMBI that you want to save as a favorite. Now hold down the minus ("-") key and press a digit key (0-9) to assign the CURRENT PROG/COMBI to that favorite key.

To use FAVORITES MODE in performance:

Press HOLD key until "FAVORITES" is displayed. You are in "FAVORITES MODE". Now you can press one of the ten digit keys to instantly recall the favorite PROG/COMBI that you assigned to that key.

Note: in FAVORITES mode you cannot use the digit keys to select any other progs/combis besides your favorites. Press Hold key again to leave Favorites mode.
