Ok. Against my WAY better judgment, I decided to rough it vocally though I am not completely well. To make matters worse, I am getting no signal from my good microphone...so I recorded through a trashy backup Nady.
BUT...
I need to start getting some feedback so I can make corrections.
What I considered unfinished are the leads. I intend on redropping all the lead vocal parts through a better mic and in a few days when my voice has completely cleared up. However, you can still rag me over it if you like, ha ha ha.

Well if this is rough, I can't wait for the polished up version. How I planned it, sounds a little pitchy the first time. I really love your words here. You certainly have this style nailed to the tee. And though it's poppy, hey the bridge just started, nice change up. Nice piano there. That lead part after that seems a bit rough in the mix. This is really a great song. I'm so glad you're in our group. I just can't get over how professional you sound on every level with these. While I can hear parts where you say it's rough, it's overall already great sounding. With just very minor tweaking this song is gonna go down as one of your great classics. And this is just February. Yikes. Really outstanding. This is why my little ballad I'm working on is so scarey, because I don't have your great vocals, so I'm doing spoken word. But trying to make it emotional and grand in a new wave 80s sort of way. But do polish this up so you can put it behind you. Great job.
PS I really like how once you've built up the towards the end rather gradually so it's hardly noticeable, but when it gets a bit quieter at the finish I realized you had gone from grand to grander and grandest than soft again. Nice effect there. _________________ George Nelson is 2loose

Wow - dam decent for unpolished man! FYI - You and I am not in the same league. Some day I might reach your level.
I did think there were a few spots that the voice was too bright and punched thru. Nice bass slide. Oh yea - nice change up. So how do you get that distorted guitar so clean while not being so loud? I really liked the vocal harmony, especially at the end - nice touch.
Ya know - this tune made me feel good _________________ Care for a jelly baby?

Hey John, I'm really loving that OSAM, and every day feeling not able to be at your high level!!
I like this song a lot, George is right saying that is becomes great, and greater and even greater, but you don't realize it, until the end, and it's a great feel!
Choirs and armonization are very well done, great voices over here!
Just a little note: be careful, around 3:33, voices are singins an Amaj armony, but the instrumental parts is already on the next Amin chord, so for a few seconds it sounds strange.
I'm sorry I'm always listening thru iPod earphones at the office, so I can't tell you that much about the mix, but it sounds very good to me.

Thank you all for the compliments.
YES on the mic change. Those cheap mics sound so cold and bright. Hopefully between getting another mic and my voice clearing a bit more I can get a good lead sound. (as well as one or two backup fixes).
Really good ear there Diego. I almost missed that. It is actually the guitar bleeding over the the background voices causing the crazy intonation. I will fix that immediately. As Dr. Who noted I wanted a "clean" sounding distortion, but it has a lot of echo and that got carried.
I might have something for you guys today or tomorrow. I am almost clear. Nothing that a good cup of coffee can't fix this morning!

Hi Stephen! Thanks man. You know me, I love that retro stuff!
Thanks jazlover... I hope everyone enjoys it.
EVERYONE....I have reupped the track. I got another mic this afternoon and redropped the lead. My vocals are still only about 85% but hopefully you will agree that I can walk away for a bit from it before coming back to simply perfect the lead maybe later this month.
Let me know if there is anything else...OH, and I fixed the guitar drowning the last chorus.

Yeah, I agree now is much better!
I'm sure you'll get even better, I really like your style!
I'm with Lorenzo and Stephen: it sounds retro but not dated, and it would be great on a vinyl!
I found some other little tuning issues (like in the lead vocals of the phrase starting at 1.25), but I don't dislike them, because they sounds "in style".
Very well done!

Hi Jon
After a couple of listens I'm still feeling like playing it again! A great sounding song with beautiful lyrics too....and the vocals sounded very good to me. It certainly does take one back to the simplicity and honesty of earlier groups, really touches the heart.
Looking forward to hearing more of your songs,
Regards from
Dee |

Again I thank everyone for their comments and compliments! It drives me on!
Dr. Who- Thanks man! YES! Never underestimate your vocal mic. It is important and ALL the EQ and effects in the world cannot fix a bad sounding mic in a recording situation. I still want a better mic. If anyone has suggestions with a decent priced LD condenser I am open for suggestions.
Diego...thanks for catching that! I had listened a dozen times and convinced myself that it must just be me. After isolating track for track (I have about 28 vocal tracks...six during that part), I had come down to just the instruments and could not find it. So I soloed each vocal with a solo of each instrument track. It was one lousy floating note on the piano throwing the whole thing off.
Of course it was throwing my singing off as well. So I redropped those parts without the floating piano part.
It is fixed and upped again. Sorry for so many reupps.
Just as a question: I added an "Oh no" at the beginning of the guitar solo. Is that too much? Does it add or take away? Indifferent? Lemme know. I am ready to move on. ha!!! _________________ Jon Solo

Great John, you're really working seriously on details!
Even if it wasn't in perfect pitch, I liked that part because it was "in style", sounding retro, like a tape didn't running at the right speed just for a few.
Well done mate!
Oh, please, be kind when it'll be my turn: I'm going to post my own vocal arrangments of some gospel/spiritual/swing/folk songs, and the funny thing are not arrangments, but the fact that all parts will be sang by me
You are going to have your revenge about vocal pitch

Hey, Jon,
Not really much to say here...it just needs the items like perhaps a more careful vocal and I went back several times for the point at which the pitch dif seemed to occur (per Diego..), and it fits the style anyway..but I suspect you are uncomfortable in really "strecthing" your vocals a bit...Free up and support a bit more and you HAVE the voice for this...
I can say no more...This is so much closer to polished than most...."you augtta be in pictures", seems to me.!!! I am just carried away by the overall sounds.. The chord structure is SUPER and (almost) unexpected except on the very best of this genre!!! Not soon to be forgotten!!!
My Regards!!!, John (ellll)
