I am sketching out the chords for my feb OSAM piece on the piano and I feel that one part of it sounds terrifically familiar and I am accidentally ripping off something else. Ever felt that way Wink

If you listen to this mp3 :

http://daz.korgforums.com/misc/L17.mp3

... do you recognize this at all ?

In actuality I don't envisage the song sounding remotely like this (i.e. just the solo piano), it will be those chords but some very different sounds, interweaving melodic parts etc.

Just by way of an update ... I've started OSAM music making officially now. I just needed to tidy up the studio or rather put it back together, things had gotten a little messy in there and it was still rigged up for recording vox/guitars etc rather than working on my solo stuff.

Daz.

Sounds nice Daz...
Sounds familiar, but hard to tell what/who it sounds like... Don´t think it´s an accidental ripoff tho.

Daz, totally off topic. Since I've converted to my new Vista computer I can't stream mp3, I only have the option to download and then play it from my hard drive. Also like m3u files or some such thing. Anyway I'll listen now and see what I think.

I think those are nice chords and are basic enough that even if it matches somewhat with another song, what the heck. I would never copy chords completely on purpose, but I've borrowed certain portions without worry. I think all the chord progressions have been invented at this point anyway. Trick is make it your own, which I'm sure you will.

Actually, as said well by a forum member...

"There is very little new left..." It, to me, is in the use, unless very obvious...! I also have one to ask about, and will later...but I am not sure it matters, if you change the use..

We see a lot of this in Christian music...not deliberate...but in praise music there isn't that much difference in themes...Remember also ..used to be true for Country..'till it became the "new" pop...Most of the things you recognize are usually "hooks" that are very old...

I don't rec. it Daz..heck.. go for it...

Yes you are infringing on a song I wrote about 20 years ago called Passion's Pain. Laughing I am with e4xl. There is little new with chords. Melody is about there as well. It is a nice starting pattern and sounds like the basis of a good song.

I can't wait to hear what you do with the interweaving melodies as you describe. I love it when I get "part" and "counterpart" melodies especially.

Honestly, I care not if something I start writing sounds similar to something else, I know in the end it'll have my unmistakable trashy....I mean...trademark sound, I can't help that.
Anything that bears your signature style will be good, so I wouldn't concern myself if I were you.
Obviously, none of us would intentionally rip off another artist, but it's so difficult to do something totally different than anything that's been done before.
As Jazzy said, "go for it"!

O.K. You have to play this...: (!!!)

Key,...G major..Both chord and melody pattern follows:

1-GM root position..melody note B above,
2-GM first inversion (6/3, that is, bass on a B),.. Melody note is up to G..

3-CM chord, root position melody down half step to F#...(forms aug 4th w/C... a passing tone or suspension..)
4-CM, root position, (>either played, OR tied over<)..and.. melody drops to an E...

or to just say the melody, B-G-F#-E... half..or quarter notes..and perhaps eighth note in the melody at the suspension..('course in writing one might use any number of other chords for contrast...)

I keep believing it is used a lot as a hook...what say you??? Can I write a song on it??

Regards, ellll Rolling Eyes (John)...

Thanks guys much appreciated ! Cool I just didn't want to find my new piece was just a rip off of Moonlight Sonata or something Wink

After relieving me of me concern ... I last night I started to record the actual piece, with the proper instrumentation and it sounds so completely different and so completely "me" that I am now less concerned. I think you'll (hopefully) find it an interesting listen after hearing this piano sketch ... 'cos it sounds nothing like that.

I am really enjoying the "team spirit" happening here !

I wonder how many times I've tried to pick out a song, and ended up with something similar, but not the same Smile
So many variations to try, so it's all good.
The chords are different but the first thing I though of was Hazel O'Connor 'Will you'.

I like these chords Daz, it's looping at the moment, and sounds sweet.

It may be worth remembering,

Some great Phil, Statesman or somebody (whatever) said roughly.."Nothing "new" under the sun" Everythings been done before, we just don't usually know it..

Hey, do any of you guys remember the days when half the pop tunes were c, a minor f and g and it went over and over thru the whole thing. there were a few variations. White Shade of Pale is even a variation of that with a few other chords thrown in.

Why Do Fools Fall In Love
Tears On My Pillow
Spirit of America (with some bridge variations that made it rock)
Come Go With Me
Since I Don't Have You (another nice variation)
Teen Angel

Hell...the whole American Graffiti soundtrack and then some.
