Am I to assume at this point, March 23rd, that most of our OSAMers have nothing at all to post yet for comments? Hey, guys/gals we want to hear your rough masterpieces in process. We want to take your mixes and find all the problems and critique you and then pat ourselves on the back as if we actually had something to do with your genius. Then in private we can retire to our own shame at not having a nickel's worth or your real talent or sound gear and begin filmsy attempts to steal all our song ideas and copy your techniques. Must we wait until that last rush at the end of the month again? I do hope you can all make the deadline this time, we only had one straggler for Feb. Let's make March a clean sweep. My concern is that typically the group starts strong and we lose some along the way. This will not happen this OSAM, I am determined.

Yeah!
Right you are George, it's been so quiet on the OSAM front.
I'm trying to decide which of my songs to designate for next month's entry, I've written 3, but only two are near finished, it was time to step away from them for a bit., or I could start another one.
My band has a couple weeks off, (boy, that feels good), so I've been a song writing fool...instead of just a dang fool!
Razz
I'm available if I can be of assistance now.
Write dem toonz fokes!

Yes time is running out so quickly now. What happened to March ????

A quick question: I'm using a combi this time (first time for me), but am finding it annoying how it uses up half the seq and 4 out of 5 of the insert fxs. These 4 fxs do weird and wonderful things to the combi tracks which is great, so which fx should I use for extra sounds (added by me)....does a graphic EQ sound like a good idea?

(Master fx is set to reverb)

Thanks all, and hope we all make it on time.

Dee

Dee, I wouldn't get caught up on which effect to use. Which program sounds you need is the most important. Then you can either reuse some effects that are already assigned or figure out which track needs something specific, like delay. If there's not a compression effect you could go with that, you can always use some compression to beef up the sound. Or distortion, or overdrive, give your tune a bit of nastiness to it. It all depends on what you want things to sound like. The other way, once you figure out how to do this, is simply to sample the combi portions of your song and convert the sample to a program. Now you can start fresh with a 16 track sequence and all your own effects and one track is your combi, which has the effects already recorded into your sample and played and held for the appropriate measures. That's a little tricky, but some of us have done that before. Only thing is, the sample is now recorded and you adjust that and tweak on the fly as it's like pre-recorded. It's probably best to continue for now on what you're doing. Just add some interesting other tracks that can 'borrow' from the effects that are being used. I hope this helps a bit at least.

I'd love to add something to what George just posted Dee, but I'm so far removed from keyboard sequencing that I just don't have much of a clue anymore.

That's great informaton George! But I'll stick to what I've got so far, as you suggest. I'll try compression too.

I did find that trying to use the fxs used by the combi produced some rather odd results Very Happy . Everything goes mad when combi's are around.

Well, the news is that my song is finished!!! I got the whole thing recorded today, so just need to fix a few things and try some fxs.

Next bit of news is that I'm going to order a Dell computer this week, and could have it in 7 to 10 days from now Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy .

Still have to get my new song onto our family computer which is upstairs from the synth Confused

Thanks for your help,

Dee

Just rushed off and set that last ifx to compression. Wow! instantly beefed up sound! I might still fiddle with the overall mix volumes, then I'm ready to post.

Thanks George, and hi to Stephen and John Smile

My computer-to-be has a 2GHz processor, 3G of RAM and 250Gb hard drive.
Should be okay...???!!!! Also getting a wireless router.

Hi Dee....

On specific advice from a friend.. Everything I do now is compressed...then re-checked for level... We will see how it is on the OSAM in the future...Maybe I will be off the hook a "little" for bad sound...

P.S. ..I want a new computer............ Sad Very Happy

Dee,

The computer sounds great. Should more than fix the ticket!

I would be cautious with compression. Use it sparingly. It is not really there to shape your sound as much as it is to keep your sound all in one place. It is perfect for irate sounds such as bass, which can throw in a deep harmonic and overfill that one section of the track.

EQ is a good choice, because it has a filtering effect and can really help shape your voices.

Chorus is another great effect as it can fatten a thin track quite quickly.

No rush to anyone here, but it is great to hear new music within the span of the calendar month. OSPCM (one song per calendar month) did not have a good ring to it so they went with OSAM. Laughing

If anyone needs help or suggestions, we are here.

If you need inspiration, stay away from websites you visit often (except here of course). That can get you into a routine and ruin your creativity.

Jon

with my new work I'm at home only a few hours... and I just use them to sleep eh eh eh I'll try to finish the work or at least present an "idea" for the end of the month, but it will be a real challenge, full time work is killing my free time (as a student) Rolling Eyes

If I may add: there is nothing easy about OSAM.

It is not about prolificness.

There are some artists who just pump out song after song (a certain "hare" from this forum comes to mind Laughing ). This project is NOT for them. It is for those of us, like Lorenzo above, who are just tied down beyond our own control yet need an outlet for our passion and some encouragement along the way.

The outlet is here, free and open. But encouragement comes with a cost. We need something to chew on.

My favorite post from last month was a 12 second snippet of someone asking "does this sound familiar to you". While far from a finished product, it was a little diddy of chords begging for more. It was an idea. And it was posted.

To anyone running late take a moment to play and record one line from that idea that briefly ran through mind today, or that brief almost insignificant tune you whistled while driving or working, or the fleeting concept that was "stolen" from something you heard on the radio, and post it here. We are your servants as it were...ready willing and occasionally able to help you take it to the next step.

For some of us, that first step IS the next step. Even if it is a few seconds, we are eager. Remember, hearing YOUR music is what inspires us all to keep writing during the OSAM. Wink
