Hi,
I am interested in using an electribe simply as a control surface, i think i can get one pretty cheap off ebay. For instance, I saw an EA-1 today. I know that getting MIDI out of these things will be easy, but is there a way to send messages in, simply to make the lights and buttons turn on and off? Kind of like the native mode for padKontrol etc. If anyone can direct me to some info, I would be most grateful, thanks!

sort of, but not like what you're expecting.... you can certainly toggle buttons via cc messages that will light up and turn off, and the pads will respond to note messages, but there is no way to use it like in native mode where pure sysex data is used to communicate.

I should mention that on top of that, electribes use a lot of NRPN messages versus CC messages.

Hi Ruso, thank you very much for your replies!
I think that would be fine for my purposes - it doesn't matter what the messages are specifically, as long as it's possible to make any particular object light up or not.
Are you able to direct me to a good spec sheet for this kind of thing?
I think the knob and button layouts on the electribes are particularly nice for using as controllers.
Thanks again.

I can get you midi implimentation for the emx and the esx, not the older electribes, I'm not sure where to find those documents.... but I can say if you hook it up to a computer and use a program called midi ox, you can see what messages are used for what....

this way you can monitor anything that comes in so you can pin down which message goes to what.

So it's pretty much the case that what is sent out will control that element if the message goes in? If so, that's pretty easy.
I was looking at 1st gen, they are nice and compact.
