What do you mean by normalizing, George?

And where would you do this? Is it part of the "export as wav file" option?

if you're in audacity, you could normalize individual tracks when mixing, but i would reommend not doing that, and instead mix your tracks slightly on the quieter side, then when you're done you can start a new audacity project and bring in your finished wav file and then click/drag select the entire track then under effect i have an option to normalize, there it will increase the overall volume of the track in this case to -3 db, which is decent, now some here may disagree with this method but since i use audacity a lot i knew of this effect in there, i actually do this in soundforge when i need it as it works better there and i can control what it's doing better, anyway, that's one way to normalize if you're using audacity, you can do individual tracks or the finished track, at least you know you're not going over zero.

Hi George,

Thanks for the reminder...I couldn't remember what I had done in that fashion from before....You are right of course...

I think my mind just kind of.."fell" Shocked back into that earlier idea as an auto response to all the tweaking done today by the big recorders on the majors...I was used to "doin' a job on it"...all from live..., and then hoping for the best...but accepting what you got...(All my active teaching, the school I was at did the recording for me....a few years, the band dept had all new Ampex and did all the schools work....)..

But I will go back to the normalization route I was using...it did work well..!! Perhaps you and others will remind me...even more strongly/accurately..., of just how to do it....?

Many thanks for the kind reminder.,and I note the question from the gurll....Dee...Thanks, as it helps me as well....

Johnny..(ellll) Hi Dee...Thanks again, all!!! Very Happy

Point about this...,

I have all the new downloads...Audacity...some fantastic!!! There are literally hundreds, as they continue to try to keep up with the expensive paid programs...Go to the home site and just download!!!!

If I would just get busy and learn what the ---- they are, and do some work with them!!!!! Shocked Shocked

Dee, on Audacity they are on the top toolbar..under effects...

Now this "puppy" takes me to a vivid autumn afternoon long ago with a lady who eventually broke my damn heart...good thing I was young and resillient enough to move on........I get falling leaves on the campus quad, hands being held, smiles, and that grand feeling of contentment that pervades in those fine times. John, your music always takes me into beautiful places!
CHEERS!

Hey Ron!!!!!!!,WoW!!!

Gee...great to hear from you!!! I have just 'bout gone crazy with a lot of romanticism recently....tryin' now to get a bit of the jazz started...

Even have been doin' progreaaive chords a lot...but haven't got into it good yet. Hope to change out of this girl stuff soon...

Thanks indeed for the comments...I got the heartbreaks as well....like the one that hit Chicagoland...when I was still young enough to chase her....didn't do any good... Confused Confused I just always thought girls and romance make the best subject matter...and never got over it...to my wife's dismay...(have to watch the swingin' fry pan, to this day.... Very Happy )

So good to hear from you and have you around ...when you are...!! I remember well the great stuff that you and other friends put here in the forum threads...and the show tune and musical style things just really took me for a ride!!

Thanks for the kind comments, Indeed! Will always remember you and your kindness!!!

I have a hard time "reviewing" a symphonic song.. I honestly like them, bot only listen to them on TV/Movies... However, i have to tell you that this sounds really good as a composition. I could see this as a theme in some romantic movie Smile
'Nice job

Thanks, Pecca,

May I say, your coverage of the music here seems to be very careful and thoughtful!!..Hence, I thank you very much for taking an interest in this!! You do me a real kindness!!

I am working on getting the clipping and occ. dist. off my stuff...I think I am just not hearing it as I get older, so am dropping my volume back for record!!!

Again, My Thanks! Johnny..., (John)..(ellll).. Shocked

Elll, it's too bad if you don't have a soundforge or wavelab type of software where you can actually view clearly your sound waves. In soundforge for example you click on 'detect clipping' and it shows you where if at all you have clipping, if it's a problem you could re-record it a tiny bit lower in volume, if it's well below the 0 db range you can even normalize it then to hit 0 without going over. I'm sure there must be some quite reasonable software out there now that would let you do this for next to nothing. And you wouldn't have to learn all that much if you just need it for a few things like clipping problems. Maybe someone knows a download link or something that would help, because then you wouldn't have to depend on your ears to tell you if there's a problem or not.

Hi All..and George

Can you go and listen sometime and see if the song is any better?

I recorded at 75% level on the keyboard, and 5% level on the sound card...

Then did the normalization...

It seems better to me...

Thanks, Friends!! Johnny Rolling Eyes ellll Very Happy

Elll, now you have a little bit of room below 0 db. If you normalize you will get a bit more volume but there is no clipping now according to m soundforge.

Question...

Could you just repeat "normalize" to bring up the volume a bit additional at the time you are working on it???

I am not sure if I understand what you mean by repeating the normalization. Once you normalize a track, the only simple way for normalizing to have an affect on it again is to compress the track a bit.

Normalize simply takes the loudest peak and brings it to zero db so you could normalize it a hundred times but to no effect. You can amplify in audacity, but that will risk going over 0. I only amplify when I want to bring up a select range up 3 decibles or so, like a part that doesn't sound loud enough for a certain section.

Roger guys, I get it now...

Unlike an "Effect",.. normalization goes to a specific level....and thats, that..., its over,....right?

I just can't really tell if it is "LOUD" enough..but then one can always turn up the volume right??

However...(!!!!) I did make a cool discovery...

I am used to listening constantly through 'phones...as my wife and I have such diff. interests in music...

But I played several of your tunes for Linda today..inc Jon's (which she said could be made into a great country tune,,,( Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes )....)..and I was exp. with the gain after she left, and could turn up your things quite high..and it still sounded "in bounds" so to speak, even when very loud...

I need to listen more with the speakers I KNOW!!!

My Regards,, Johnny John (ellll) Very Happy
