Well I hate to deliver another unfinished song to this group. However, for some reason this month I have no voice. I just cannot find it. Of course this song is hard to sing, at least to me. Inspiration is here...just no voice...or at least a very shaky one. Not to mention I am way outside of my box on this song.

But I hope you like what I have done thus far. The whole song will likely be redone top down, but this will give you an idea of what it will do. The last chorus was just not in me to drop. Sorry. Maybe next week, ha ha.

Here is Pride.

Edit: Here is AN updated version...not THE completed, but closer to the final.

Oh man - the beginning scared the crap outta me!! I had the volume up to high. That was unusual - hold on let me try that again. Okay - whew - got the level good now.

So I am listening to how you sing - how long did it take you to get good at singing? The harmonies are really effective.

I like the hi energy of this tune - serious contrast with the slow melody. This is one of your more edgy sounding tunes. Nice change up.

I can't imagine re-working a whole tune from the ground up! You are seriously dedicated and have much patience!

You must be close to completing your CD. Have you a title for it?

Cheers,

={> Art

I don't know why I'm getting some Yes here, in the timing and the vocals? Anyway, such fun to hear this style coming from you. I do hear nits here and there but not much and there are parts where especially vocally you hit some genius sections. It seems the guitar effects could use more punch in them, not that they aren't decent, but I didn't quite get the grandness those parts need in this style. I can't say enough about how fun this is to listen to and I think overall your lyrics are very well done, though I could hear you playing with the phrasing a bit with the verse sections. I do hope to hear the finished of this. You have a way of performing voodoo magic in the last hour and take what is a great song and kick it over the top. I really appreciate your hanging in with us here and raising the bar ever higher.

Hi Jon!
What do you use to tune your voice?
BTW, don't warry it happens sometimes, due to bad weather or to stress or to something else, but the voice goes... Crying or Very sad

I like it a lot, but really a lot!
You have a great voice (even if it's not at its 100%), and a great and smart usage of vocal harmonies.
Heavy guitars are well done, too.
Just as I'm curious: why some guitars are sampled, and others are real guitars?
The melody is very good, too.
I've got a lot to learn from you, Jon!

Regards

Thanks for the kind thoughts guys, I have a whole lot left with this one.

Though I have been singing regularly for the last decade, I occasionally rely on Antares Autotune to repair a note or two on a well sung line that had a slight flub (it is always better to redrop a vocal line and add/take away words and phrases as needed). However this month, with my voice everywhere, I used it on the lead to clean it up...at least till I can wrap my head around my voice and drop it correctly.

There is a lot of progressive in me that I have not tampered with, and decided to let it rip a bit on this tune. The 5/8 verses made the phrasing a bit harder to time, but I think it will come together nicely in my final. Changing to 6/8 several times in the song just felt comfortable and fun for this song.

Diego, I am not much of a guitarist. While I know a lot of things, I do some odd chord changes that don't fall as naturally to me on guitar as they do on keys, so I blend the two. For the untrained ear and good finished production, I can usually get away with it. But you got me! Very Happy

Thanks for the words. I will try to get the past two tracks finished up soon. I do not know if these songs will be featured on my upcoming CD, but it is not likely. I have one song left for it, and hope to write the bridge and record it for the December OSAM.

Jon

This should be great!
It's already DAMN COOL, and I like the vocal a lot, if it gets too much better than this, you'll completely blow us all away!

Excellent blend of time signatures, I love the instrumentation, and the melody is rockin, but lose the sampled guitar, PLEASE!
Wink
Very strong production, I absolutely insist that I get to hear the finished product, K?
Very Happy

Working on losing the sampled guitars...they are blended with a synth sound which makes it even cheesier. Anyway, there is a new edit above!!!

Here is the link in case you missed it.

New vocals, new mix, new edits, etc.

It does sound cleaner and more polished. I really love the bridge, the falling thing works very well the way you've executed it. You have so totally nailed this genre that it is like you've left the 70s styles and moved into 80s arena rock. What I'm most amazed by is how well you've pulled this off. I hadn't pictured your voice responding like this to the effects and the style, yet it works just perfectly. Such a huge sound and I'm getting the power chords that were needed. This probably needs even more polish though I can't think where. To be honest this is not the style of music I ever listen to, I used to but not so much now. Yet it's just a blast to listen to. It's kind of a cross of Kansas and Yes and a bit of Dream Theater, (that group I do still listen to). I would say do experiment with this some more as there could be some serious money in knocking these tunes out of the park.

I agree with influences mentioned by George.
I can hear some Toto, too, expecially in vocal harmony.
The 5/8 is a great time signature, I really like it a lot, and it flows greatly in 6/8, very smart. I like the bass line a lot! What I don't like that much is the snare rythm, but it's not a matter of your song: I really don't like it in no song. The choice to play the snare on the 4th and 5th beat of the measure make it sounds like a 2/4 + 1/8. On the other hand, the 3/8 + 2/8 of the guitar strumming on the verse it's so nice!!

Thanks for your comments. I have just uploaded a brand new version of the song at Soundclick. It has a remix of the instruments and new vocals as well.

It will be in "tweak" mode for some time, but for now it is a completed song. I do expect to be adding some items to it...but no time as of the moment.

Enjoy!

Jon

This mix is definitely better - The additional vocal harmonies really stand out. Not going to be on your CD eh? Well you are prolific - so I am sure there will be more CD's Smile

Any advice on how to train ones voice?

My advice, and that I've managed to record my own at all is testament to this, is to simply belt it out and record it each time and listen and work on how to master your natural sound. In my case I have to scoop out some of the low end and there's an upper midrange that I take down using an Ozone 3 Multiband dynamics. But the more you hear your voice recorded the less you totally hate it and begin to understand how it can fit the musical spectrum. Also, you've got to have others listen to how you sound and coach you, most people can't stand the sound of their own voice.

What George said, and...

Sing. A lot. Everywhere. To everything. Sing. And do not let anyone tell you that you cannot sing. If they do, and you listen, then you never will. My first and last official vocal CD was in 1998. After that I walked away from vocals for awhile and only helped others create harmonies. One of my close friends even said he was glad that I STOPPED singing. He is still my friend, but my voice is a better friend...it never let me down. Geez, put me on Oprah or better yet Dr. Phil. Laughing

Just do it. If I don't belt it out, as George put it, then it never comes (that's what she said...Office moment, sorry). And when you find your weakness, just try to narrow it down to what the weakness actually is, and then avoid it.

For example: I really suck at vibrato (that's what...nevermind). So I avoid it. I also try to avoid really low notes. I have no bass range. Also I have to do the opposite of what George does and boost my low end a bit. I also carve my mids down 1 or 2 dB around the 500hz range, and boost the 4k end...because I also lack presence in my voice.

Experiment with your voice. Also determine what tires it out...for example, my falsetto is not as clear after hitting the same high notes in "real" voice so I take care of the falsetto early, or on a different day, especially if there are different parts.

On this song I found it best to sing the song from beginning to end on the lead track, and then add parts to it...eventually deducting, or editing out sections of the lead once I had the other parts laid.

But now I am ahead of myself.

Just sing...all the time.

Jon

Oh - so the both of you post process your voice - I hadn't considered that.

Oh I am a closet shower, car ride, mowing the lawn singer (and air guitarist).

Thanxs for the info.
