This was my attempt at art rock:

http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=7105875&q=hi

Got No Soul

If I could die today
I would take me an alien girl
Throw a grand soiree
Boogie down in her alien world

To enter paradise - What’s the admission price -I ain’t got no soul No I ain’t got no soul

If you could groove today
We could clutter up these empty pages
If we could fly away
Breaking free from these rusty cages

So let the tune begin - I’ll need my violin - Cause I ain’t got no soul, no I ain’t got no soul
I need to make it clear - Until the people cheer - I ain’t got no soul No I ain’t got no soul

If I could die today - we could sail away
Gently down the interplanetary stream
On a hazy sky - Love in short supply
Such a crazy dream

If I could sing today
I would put you on a parallel
So can the milky way
Set us up in a grand hotel

To enter paradise - What’s the admission price -I ain’t got no soul No I ain’t got no soul (twice)

If I could die today - we could sail away
Gently down the interplanetary stream
On a hazy sky - Love in short supply
Such a crazy dream, such a crazy dream

Really gets me down I’m thinkin I ain’t got no soul
Such a low scream in a day dream
Voices all around me sayin I ain’t got no soul
Such a bad plan for an old man

If I could die today
I would take me an alien girl
Throw a grand soiree
Boogie down in her alien world

So let the tune begin - I’ll need my violin - Cause I ain’t got no soul, no I ain’t got no soul
I need to make it clear - Until the people cheer - I ain’t got no soul No I ain’t got no soul

As always, I'm speechless...
I feel that I'm writing the same thing every month, but you hit the spot with every OSAM entry!
I love arrangments, I love listen to your song for dozen consecutive times, I discover every time new details: you really put a lot of attention to details!

BTW, funny picture on the SoundClick player Laughing

Another quality production, and imaginative composition, not my favorite from you, but none the less impressive.
That picture on the Soundclick player.....I laughed my @$$ off!

Stephen, in my defense that was a Halloween picture, not that I have anything to defend. As far as favorite songs, this probably isn't mine either, but I do force myself to my execute my song ideas no matter how way out they are, and I do think this is less a crowd pleaser than say, Making Love To Disco, yet I believe there is a place for this sort of groove on my cd as well. For the deep thinking perhaps.

Diego: You always say such nice things about my songs. And I do think the devil is in the details. Since this was such a simple beat and chord progression I decided to add all these strange sound effects to create interest and also a space age mood. And don't worry if you don't understand the words as in this case I don't really understand them either.

Well I don't know what Art Rock is - so I'll except your tune as definition Smile

I love the lyrics - thanxs for posting them. I am thinking that listening to all your lyrics over the past year has started seeping into my brain.

Nice arpies and chirpies, and I like the light synth bass sound too. All this creates a nice back drop for your vocals.

Is this V2 M3? I haven't upgraded yet as I am in between tunes and have unfinished tunes. I hope to switch before my De. tune but am not sure I will.

Cool

Yes, that's all V2. As far as I know I've got all the updates, expanded and all. Glad you liked these lyrics. I've been reading about how your lyrics don't have to be spelled out in the meanings and are better if there remains a mystery around what they say or are implying, such as what's the back story, or what must he be thinking about if he's writing these lyrics? Art Rock I think of like David Bowie, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, T Rex, it's sort of like glam rock I guess.

As a fan of all the above mentioned, this fit right in. Very Roxy sounding....from the Brian Eno days. But this has the modern twist of clean electronica and great percussive effects attached to it. The sound effects are perfect. So good in fact, had they been more ambient and your voice been higher I would have labeled this a Roxy Music track.

You also captured a depth in the lyrics that they had as well. What caught my attention though, in addition to the wonderful world of percussion you always keep at a finger's distance, is the fantastic vocal execution on this. It is clear when you are comfortable with a track, and if you were not comfortable with this one, then you have fooled me well!

The offbeat bass also stands out. Very well done. And do I hear some vocoding going on "interplanetary stream"? Great stuff man!

Love it!

I am quite blown away, not by my voice here, but by the reaction to my voice. I just let 'er rip this time, not thinking too carefully about how the end result was going to sound. I did try hitting some actual notes mixed in with the spoken thing and tried to simply mix it up and put some 'soul' into it. I was so afraid that people were going to think the song itself had no soul, so i put as much feeling into it as i could, yet with the abstract nature of the lyrics there's a strange dichotomy. Then there's the fact that there is hardly a 3 part chord or melody anywhere so i just thickened it up with sound effect programs and rhythmic programs from radias. The harmonic vox pad that comes in and slides down is what I added last. I felt there needed to be some kind of sliding vocal. The story there is, 1) I picked a melotron pad and adjusted the pitch bend limits so I could bend it with the joystick from center all the way to the left, this worked for the G and B (fifth). But I couldn't play a third because the chord goes from maj or minor. So I did a separate track for the 3rd of the chord and changed the pitchbend interval to an extra half step so when i bent that down it hit the 3rd of Eminor. Then mixed them together and realizing they were too low sounding, 2) I repitched them in Audacity up an octave without changing tempo so I ended up with a chip-munky sound that was thinner and tighter than the melotron sound normally is.

I am starting to get where I had envisioned this OSAM, which is to take percussive sounds and use mostly bass pads and good spacey lyrics to combine a drum-n-bass thing with glam or art rock. I think my strengths are in my percussion and lyrical content, so I'm going toward songs that showcase those elements. Also, I noticed with a lot of alternative electronic rock that much of it is mostly bass and ambient sound pads.

Hee hee - thanks for the story - I always find tune stories very interesting - probably because I am still experimenting all over the place.

I have had the pitch bend problem when switching from chord types. I have tried to learn to stop the bend mid way to accommodate both types - but it is tricky.

On another note: Have you every listened to Hearts Of Space? They are on the web at www.hos.com. Their Sun. program is free on Sun. You can stream it. Sometimes they play some far out electronica. Right now I am listening to electronica classical - very interesting.

Cheers!

well my little trick to program the pitch bend to the exact distance is quite easy as you don't have to worry about hitting the exact note. And I love sliding harmony, unless it's guitar as that ends up sounding country

I liked the melodic vocal parts in here, make a nice contrast from the spoken sections, you're always experimenting, which is good.

Before reading the other comments I was thinking Bowie-esq lyrics from time to time.

Love the percussion work put me in mind of genesis in places, all wrapped up in your own style of course.

On a hazy sky

It's probably the lead part coming in here, but have you changed the lyrics (or on purpose)?

Top job.

Cheers Simon

Hey, you caught me. I did change from hazy to emerald. I thought hazy was too cliche.

I was trying to work it out, but the lead was confusing me Smile

WoW George!

This meets the expected genre requirements as defined by Georgeinar for this genre(!!) !, but ...the vocal is rather new in some ways....! Brighter at times and also, very good pitch discrimination on those low notes, and it leaves an impression of the odd alien world you present....

The rhythmic elements are SO great!! and the plan and prod. great as always!!

Thanks George...! This one is really a fun song, with some meaning also at times..

Regards!!!, John, (ellll)
