Hello all. I just scored a like new Karma.

I have a bunch of patches I saved to a card from a Triton LE, and transferred onto my laptop. Is it possible to hook up to the Karma via USB and load them into the Karma? If not, would the best thing to do be to somehow get the patches onto a floppy disc that Karma reads? What's the best way to transfer from SM card or CD onto a floppy? Go to Staples or something, have them do it?

Sorry, but the red Karma does not have a USB port. You will need to copy your PCGs to 3.5 floppy disk, take that over to the Karma and load from the floppy drive. If your computer doesn't have a 3.5 floppy disk drive, you may want to invest in a USB 3.5 floppy drive like these - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=287&name=Floppy%20Disk%20Drives

Keep in mind, also, that your Triton LE programs and combis will NOT have any KARMA GEs assigned. You'll have to "roll your own".

Finally, make sure that you back up anything to disk that you do not want to lose in the Karma. Install/load only to banks C & D, especially programs. You do not want to overwrite the factory presets in the Karma. This will really mess up combis that require these to be in place.

Thank you Jim. Is there a service in most urban areas that would transfer data to a floppy? I can put it on a CD no prob, i have it backed up on my laptop.

Also, tell me please when i go tomorrow to buy 3.5 floppy discs for my Karma... any special format? I don't know if there's double density or some other crazy thing and don't want to get the wrong kind. Thanks so much man.

You could use your local library IF they have computers that have 3.5 floppy disk drive. You can format your disks in the Karma. I hope you received the manuals with the unit so you can check out the Basic Guide, browse the index or contents etc. You'll find that many members here or over at Karma Lab Forums http://www.karma-lab.com/forum/index.php will give you the RTFM (Read the f.......manual) jab. Next, as I suggested in my first reply, if you are going to be working with the Karma, you will need to get yourself a USB connectable 3.5 floppy drive (link above). With most up-to-date computers not having the old 3.5 floppy, you would be wise to invest in one. They are not that expensive. However, the other problem will be locating a store that sells 3.5 disks. Phone before you go shopping to save yourself the bother of going from store to store. Check Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot etc.

Whoo-hoo! I just installed a flash reader replacement for the original floppy from the red KARMA workstation. I've imported a few floppies of KARMA and Triton LE PCG's for Karma-fied combi's and plain old MOSS programs and it's working perfectly

I took 32 photos of the whole process and wrote up a step-by-step. So, i'll figure out some place to post that - it's an 8.5MB zip file

in the meantime, here are some sources for the USB drives on ebay. They range from $29-$59 and seem to only come in putty, grey and black.

They have a limit of 100 (00-99) blocks of 1.44MB's, so an old conference giveaway 256MB flash thumb drive works well - anything more than that is wasted capacity.

Here are 4 ebay links to get you started. The mini-CD it comes with is an old version of the formatting utility - the latest version and a rewritten manual are available at www.floppytousb.net - funnily enough www.floppytousb.com has something similar that appears to be network enabled, but this is a proven replacement. If anyone tries the ".com" hardware please let me know

You should be able to find a usb floppy drive at just about any office / computer / "best buy" store - they're not too expensive - a quick google search of "USB floppy" got results from $~15 to $30 with more expensive options up to $99 - but te budget version should do the trick without having to do surgery on your computer or your Karma.
