Hello,

I have a triton rack integrated in my MIDI setup. I currently have a keyboard whose midi in port is connected to the midi out port of the triton, so that I can send program change messages to it when changing combinations. I do this by setting one of the 8 timbres in my combination to "EXT" on the same midi channel as my recieving keyboard. Now when I press the increment/decrement buttons on the triton rack to change COMBI the external keyboard automatically changes patch. This all works perfectly.

However, the way I wish to change COMBI is by sending program change messages to the triton rack from my master keyboard (not the same keyboard which is connected to the midi out port!). This also works fine, as sending program change messages to the rack changes the COMBI. However, when I change COMBIs in this way, no program change message is sent on the EXT timbre to my keyboard. Is this behaviour expected, or is it a bug in the OS? I would like to change COMBIs on the rack via program change message and still have my EXT timbre send out a program change message to my other keyboard.

Any thoughts/advice would be very much appreciated.

This is the weird world of MIDI. What happens in this case is that when you change patch on the rack it sends a program change command from the midi out and changes the patch on your keyboard. But when you send a program change into the rack the program change doesn't go to the racks midi out (goes to midi thru though). You should try to make a EXT2 timbre to your combi with the right program change number and try that or plug the secondary keyboard to midi thru and change the patches for both the rack and the secondary keyboard from the first keyboard.

It sounds like that's what he did, though. To summarize his question:

When the Triton Rack changes combis because of a program change received on its MIDI IN, do any EXT timbres in that combi send program changes on their respective channels?

In my case, my TR is my master keyboard as far as controlling things goes, so I don't really know what the outcome would be.

This should happen, but i'm pretty sure that is what the poster is saying isn't happening!

If i get the time I may hook up my K1 to the TR and send patch changes, see if it works.

it does sound like the kind of thing that could be easily overlooked as its not very often the case except with the rack module. and even then I expect not many people are using the rack to send program change messages. Unfortunately if it is a bug and it does only happen in the triton rack then I personally don't see it being resolved by korg any time soon.
